I am on the verge of tears! Cassius has had a murmer since he was six months old, his vet said it was about a 2 on the scale of 1-6. This past weekend I had to bring him to the emergency vet because he woke up and couldn't put his back paw down (he is fine, soft tissue damage...too much play). When the vet listened to his heart he said "that's a doozy" I said oh his murmer? It's about a 2, he said no it is more like a 4! I was stunned! I scheduled an echo for tomorrow but when I went to get his records his regular vet had me bring him in and he said it is still a 2 and also he had another vet check and he said the same thing. Cassius is only 13 months old and I am worried sick about him. Does anyone out there have boxers with murmers that are doing ok?

Baylee is 8 years old and has lived with this for YEARS and she is doing great! Sure she has problems not related to the heart murmur but she is other wise healthy.

The grade of the murmur depends on the experience of the Dr, I honestly believe that! When I went to the cardiologist with Baylee the one resident said it was a 3, the other Dr said it was a 2, then the older resident (believe me much older) said 1-2. I hope things go ok!

Good Luck,

Jaimie

Different vet's tend to grade murmers differently. One doctor might say it's a 1 and another might say it's a 3!!!! I think your best bet would be to see a board certified cardiologist. They are very good because they deal with the heart on a daily basis and have had x-tra training for that field. I would believe the cardiologist over any vet when it comes to the heart!!!!! Good luck, let us know how he's doing!!!!

Thank you for your replies. One of the two vets that said he was a 2-3 is in his 60's and has been a vet forever, so it made me feel better. He is going tomorrow for the echocardiogram so I will know more then. I will keep you all posted!

Hello, my name is Debbie and I am so interested in your post because you are from Connecticut and so am I and I am just dying to know where you got this puppy from. I lost my 5 month old boxer puppy in September from heart problems and I am still devistated by the whole nightmare. I bought him from a "so called" responsible breeder here in Connecticut who lied to falsified health tests and sold me a puppy for thousands of dollars who had a know heart defect. I later found out that the bitch was diagnosed with a heart condition before she was bred. I am very curious where your puppy came from. Also I had the same trouble with the so called "grading"of the heart murmer one vet said a 2 one said a 3 and so on. I finally took him up to Tufts University school of veterinary medicine in Mass. for a color doppler echocardiogram with board certified cardiologists and they informed me that the puppy had severe sub-aortic stenosis. He had a grim prognosis for his future and he was already showing clinical signs of the heart disease. He was collapsing on the ground and not breathing if he did any hard exercise. The visit to Tufts was not that bad it was under $500.00 but I felt it was worth it to find out the exact problem and so that I could get written proof from the cardiologists and go after this breeder...Please let me know if I can help at all..I am in Fairfield county, in conn. good luck

Do have it checked out with a cardiologist. I lost my beautiful baby Chance at 2 years. I listened to my vet when he said he had a grade 2 murmer, I didnt know what it was all about or what I could do to have it checked further. After the fact I found out he had some damage to his heart, not a murmer and if I had taken him to a cardiologist he may have lived longer. I no longer use this vet, but truly if I had read up on it and took it further i might still have him today. :(

Good luck, Cassius. Glad that your paw is going to be fine and sending vibes ~~~~~~~ to you and Mom. Differing veterinary opinions can make one crazy! I'm glad you found someone you feel comfortable with.
