I just found out that my 8 week old puppy has a heart murmer? The breeder is asking if I am going to take the puppy. He is a beautiful one and I was crazy about him BUT.......... people are telling me it could be trouble. HELP!!!

T-Max,
My Riley was also diagnosed with a heart murmur when he was 9 weeks old. The vet told me that they would keep an eye on it and that it could be gone by his next visit. Well, his next visit was this past Tuesday and the vet said it was indeed all gone. He now has a healthy heart.

The only advice that I can offer is to do what Matt S. asked, find out what grade the heart murmur was. Discuss it in detail with the breeder as well as the veterinarian. If it's a slight murmur chances are pretty good that he will grow up and out of it. If it's a severe murmur, well I won't go there because I really don't know what the results will be.

Regardless of the grade of the murmur, you have to make a decision of taking this pup or not. If it feels right to you, go for it. Just fully understand what you could potentially be getting yourself into before you jump into it. I hope I helped out!! Good luck and keep us posted!!!

Thank you for the info I told my breeder to find out. She is making an appointment to find out. Hopefully it will turn out okay.

As mentioned in some of the other replies many puppies have a heart murmur and they grow out of it, but they don't all grow out of it. Our boxer Hooligan was also diagnosed with a murmur as a pup but he did not outgrow his, but it remained at a level 1-2 his whole life, and till the day he died at almost 10 years of age it never caused him any problems, but it was something that always had to be considered and checked before any surgeries he had and we had to keep a closer eye on it as he got older. So depending of the severity of the murmur (6 being the worst) they can still live a normal healthy life. By the way when we did lose him it was nothing to do with heart problems. Anyway I hope in this case that he grows out of it but I wanted you to know that if he doesn't it does not have to be a big problem. I hope you still get the pup.

Adelle,
Thank you for placing the thread in the home page. Somebody told me to move the thread to DOG HEALTH. I am new and I don't know how to.
Thanks again,
:D

T-Max,

FYI:
You are unable to move threads about the boards, only moderators can.
I moved this thread from the boxer ring to here.
As for this thread appearing on the home page, well Adelle didn't do that, the most recent replied to posts in forums such as Introductions, Boxer Ring & Health are placed automatically on the home page. As Adelle's was one of the most recent threads when you came into boxerworld it appeared on the homepage ... :)

You will need to find out what grade it is. Jake was born with a murmur that didn't get better by the second vets appt. He ended up having heart surgery at 18 months old. I wish I could tell you how it turned out. He died of 2 different types of cancer when he was 23 months old. I think his heart was better. I think it was a grade three at birth. It might do good to take him in for an echocardiogram. That can tell you what valve is involved, what the gradient is, and any other issues thet can't be detected with a stethoscope. He was worth every minute and every tear in the end. Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.
