I have an 8 month old flashy fawn named Grace. I just took her to our vet today because her ears had been itching this past week and they were a little crusty on the inside and outside. He said she was having bad allergies and it had caused a staff infection! She was given steroids, antibiotics and allergy medication. Grace is my first Boxer and my first short-haired dog and I had no idea what a "moth eaten" coat looked like. He said it (her coat) wasn't bad yet, but still... He said the cause could be hereditary or diet related. Has anyone had experience with this? I knew Boxers had sensitive skin, but I am beside myself and would appreciate any words of advice/wisdom. Thanks...

Annabelle has allergies to something. We took her to Key West with us and she had a reactions to something. She got bumps all over her skin, then they turned crusty, and then she lost her hair on those places. Poor thing, she looked awful for a couple of weeks until all of her hair grew back.

Allergies

Hi!
My girl is 5 years old. She has a chronic allergie towards a lot of things. It began when she was about nine months old. Her skin turned light red, and she got bumps all over her body. She had problems walking cause she was itching so much.
After a while with trying out several skinlotions that didnt work, I was desperat to see my girl in such pain. Then my vet took a bloodsample of my dog, and out of that they made a special vaccine for my dog. That really worked! Now shes seldom breaking out, and she gets an vaccine injection about 3 - 4 times a year. So now my girl is healthy and we are so happy for her!!

I really hope your dog will be fine, too!

Best regards, Toya

The vet recently prescribed prednisone to my 1.5 yr female boxer, Reeses. She has been doing great on the pills, I give here half a tablet everyother day. I also use Liquid 3v Caps in her food which helped clear up the flaky skin on the tips of her ears. The tablets will make her urinate more, but only giving 1/2 tablet every other day it is not a concern anymore.

Our late Dutch had skin problems all her life, we took her to several different vets and they gave her different treatments the allergy thing came up but the prescribed food didn`t make any difference. When we finaly got our current vet he prescribed prednisone and cephelexin, as she also got a staph infection. It seemed to help her, although she would get a reacurance almost every spring and summer. If it was an allergy it had something to do with the outdoors, we never did find out what really caused it,but the meds worked every time and as my vet put it "I`m not a fan of prednisone but it is a necessary evil" She only had to stay on the meds for between 10 and 14 days at a time. Also I did got a skin suppliment to combat the dryness she would get after. Good Luck;)

Thank you to everyone who replied! I love this place! I feel much better about Grace's situation knowing you all have been dealing with similar conditions. Our vet prescribed Cephalexin and Temaril that Grace takes twice a day, and also a shampoo called Histacalm for her itchiness. Within a day, there was a noticeable difference in the flakey parts on her ears, and she actually stood in the tub (fairly) still for 10 minutes (!) while I rubbed the shampoo on her skin. I knew she felt better! She is not scratching even a fraction of what she was Saturday so I am feeling better as well. I am interested in what will happen after she finishes this prescription - we'll see. Again, thanks to all who replied. We are so grateful!
