Clarice decided to take a swim at the dog park yesterday, and I was wondering if anyone has a boxer that swims?

I need advice about her new found venture. Should I get her a life jacket?! She did pretty good, but when she would turn around she would sink a little. The right side of her head dipped under a bit and she looked real surprised.

I just feel so helpless when she is out there swimming around the lake. Has anyone heard of a boxer drowning?

A friend of mine did lose her boxer to a drowning accident. Thier circumstance was little different becuase the boxer fell through the ice in the winter and drowned, so I don't think it had much to do with her ability, or inability to swim.

My boxers do NOT swim, and can not swim at all. When Owen was about 13 weeks old he fell into the river when I was camping and he sunk, he was moving his legs and feet but didn't come to the surface. I had to jump in the water and pull him out. Tegan fell in the lake too when she was about 2 years old and the same thing happened - I had to jump in and pull her out because she couldn't keep her head above the water.

Tegan and Owen wear their life jackets when they are on the boat with us, but other than that if we are around I don't worry too much. They love to wade in the water up to thier bellies, but that's about it.

I have tried to teach them to swim, but they are physically unable to do it:rolleyes:

I know many boxers that can swim, but Tegan and Owen are not one of them!

We have a life jacket for Mickey for when he's on the boat, but he doesn't wear one when he's playing on the beach. He won't go very far and never swims out past anyone. If I were around a pool or large body of water that the dog could fall into and drown, I would have my baby in a jacket. I have seen him try to "swim" and it 'ain't pretty!

Chica loves the water and she swims in our pool but only when my adult son is swimming. Also, she will sit on the first step of the pool to cool off but never goes beyond the step. Chica has always been terrified of the broom (I think someone hurt her before I found her)so we keep her out of the pool by placing a broom by the steps of the pool.

Last year at the Michigan Boxer Bash at the Lake Orion Bark Park, they have a "Swimming Hole" with a dock as a jumping off point for dogs to go swimming. I had Max & Puckers on the dock with about 5-6 other boxers and about 10 other dogs while some of the dogs went swimming, fetching sticks, balls, ect. and one boxer was bumped off the dock and sank like a stone! I reached down into 3-4 feet of water and grabbed this poor boy by the collar and pulled him up. I am convinced that if he wasnt pulled up he would of drowned, he tried to swim but he just sank.

Our poor Britany can not swim a stroke.

When we first got her we tried to get her to swim and she almost drown. My husband had to jump and rescue her. I had tried to tell him. She scratched him up bad.
Since then she will only go in up to her chest. She loves to splash and play in the shallow water. She just knows how far to go.

Our Dasia swims like a fish!!!!

It took her awhile to get use to water but the dog park we go to has a area where the dogs can swim..we used Dasia's obsession with balls and threw those in until she finally went after them. :D She now DIVES in the water and hangs out in the water ball or no!!

The other day we took Dasia and Bianca to the park after work...we didn't bring our usual stuff including Dasia's Balls but that didn't stop her..she headed straight to the water DIVED in and just swam around! She started to swim ACROSS the river and started to retrieve LILLY PADS. She would bring them to us one by one. Not sure if anyone told her that she is a BOXER not a retriever. hehe it's funny...makes my heart stop though when she swims across...i am prepared to go after her..clothes and all!!!

Angus can swim, but man is he ungraceful, splashing around like crazy. I won't let him go too far from shore but he loves going in after a ball or stick. The problem he has is that by the time he reaches the ball or stick he is splashing so much he can't find it, or it keeps moving further away. We keep a close eye on him when he is swimming and may look at getting him a life jacket for boating.

Memphis loves the water. She is a pretty decent swimmer but I still watch her every move while in the water. Sunday is her day to go to the beach and swim until she's ready to go. She also likes to ride the waverunner with my boyfriend and when you shower she has to get in there and stand with you!

This is an interesting post as...

I thought all dogs could swim. Seriously. If a dog would drown I thought it would be due to really rough waters or being in deep water and getting extremely tired... Can we get an expert's opinon?
