Hi just wondering if any one has had their babies get kennel cough?? aka "Dog Cold " Layla goes to doggie day care once a week, and on Thursday she was sneezing and had a runny nose, so we took her to the Vet and they said she has kennel cough, and to watch her as it can go into
respitory infections like (P monia) Not sure of the right spelling, but I'm sure you know what I mean>> and to keep her away from other dogs.. which means no doggie day care and no training classes ..Although it isn't possible to seperate her and Cody.. as they live in the same house and are always together, and Now he seems to be having cold type symptoms too.. Plus My daughter and I seem to be getting colds also.. Guess we all have Kennel cough in our house  I was kind of upset about this since she had her kennel cough vaccine with her puppy shots So I had thought that would protect her. But at the day care they said it is in the air and even though she had her protection to prevent it.. sometimes dogs still get it.. Arrrgh Just needed to Vent thanks for listening ~ Vickie

My Gus got it too, and he was vaccinated. They can get another strain of it! They just vaccinate for the most common strain. Gus coughed for weeks, but now he is doing good. Izzy never got anything, and my sisters 2 labs that live with us too, never got it. It just all depends on their immune system. And humans can't get it. You just happened to get a cold the same time!!! Hope your babies feel better, and you too!

Thanks Sarah for the reply back.. We've never had any of our dogs ever get Kennel cough before, so its new for us.. I do know that people can't get it.. Ours is just Winter Colds for me and my daughter as we both work with the general public and are exposed to many germs.. I just threw that in the post everyone has kennel cough at our house as a Funny.. Yeah I never knew that there are many strains of Kennel cough, so maybe she has a type that the vaccine didn't cover.. Who Knows.. Thanks for the Healing Vibes for Layla and Cody and for us too..

Duke got Kennel Cough from Dog training this summer and it turned into Pneumonia !! It was AWFUL ! He was SO sick !! It's not that common to turn into Pneumonia as my vet said this was the 3rd case he had seen in 10 years, but just a heads up !

Very expensive too !!

Duke's came on VERY quickly. He was just more quite and sleepy during the day and then about 6ish at night he was drooling, shaking, and could barely walk, and VERY warm !

When Oscar was a puppy he had kennel cough. We thought he was choking on something. Steve took video of him coughing and I took the camera with me to show the vet, but no need, he went into it again at the office. We did not think it was a respiratiry infection, it seemed more like he had something stuck in his throat. He did not go to daycare or the dog park at that point so I have no idea how he got it.

Vickie, did your vet mention anything about robitussin DM? I have had both my vet and the emergency clinic recommend keeping this in our "kids" medicine cabinet. It really help ease their cough and also keeps the throat from getting too raw and irritated. Paula

Kennel Cough is very common and not considered dangerous. It is an air-borne virus that is extremely contagious. A dog can pass the virus and not even be coughing. The chances of it progressing to pneumonia is so remote, I would not even worry about it.

For my guys, I do not vaccinate for it or give any antibiotics. It is a virus, so the the antibiotic does no good.

Don't worry and just hang in there. It sounds much, much worse than it is.

Hi All Thanks for all your post.. No the Vet didn't say any thing about the Cough syrup .. I might call and ask though.. Layla seems good, Cody however seems to be the worse of the 2 He coughs and still seems to have a runny nose. One of his ears is really red too.. We have some ear meds comming today. The dog trainer for layla said to give them Cestial season pepermint tea as it sooths their throats.. Layla laped it up as she will eat or try just about any thing she is such a little garbage disposal.. Cody laped it and acted like we were giving him something just awful .. so much for his loving tea.. maybe it was just the pepermint he didn't like.. Our kennel cough However is getting better too LOL I know mine isn't kennel cough, just weird that we all ended up with colds at the same time. Thanks again for all your wonderful support..~Vickie Nub wags from Cody and Layla

Oh I forgot to answer Darren B ??.. about Pneumonia Our Vet said to watch for signs of not eating being more lethargic and signs that the cold was worse not better like more noise when they breath or more discharge coming out of the nose ect..

We are trying not to worry too much..( yeah Right) I'm a Mom and We Moms always worry about their kids fur or skin.. But I think Having such great members and fellow boxer owners who care and give us their support and share with us their knowledge is a wonderful thing and helps us to worry a little less.((((Hugs)))
