Happy Pea, is this a normal male boxer problem?

Just a theory, but I am convinced this is submissive behavior....

I watched a documentary on wolves the other day, and it stated how the submissive pack members would roll and pee all over themselves when an alpha was present. It said that the urine contains a chemical marker that lets the alpha know that the peeing dog is submissive to it and thus avoids "attack". Judging by the numerous other behaviors that dogs exhibit that are inherited from their wolf ancestory, I would say the peeing may be another.

Your dog may be peeing to let the person know that they aren't a threat to them, therefore trying to be "friends".

I have heard most dogs will grow out of it once they are old enough to feel confident in their lives, but some may just be more timid and react that way to new people or their alpha people forever.

Good luck!

I think it really depends on what kind of peeing we are talking about here. My Tyler will get excited when we have company over and if he hasn't gone outside in a little while he will have a few dribbles of pee come out. It seems like it's involuntary and he doesnt even realize he does this. I dont consider this an accident or submissiveness of any kind - it's a combination of being excited and having to go which equals some dribbling at the door!

On the other hand, if the dog is urinating upon meeting someone or upon its owners arriving home, etc...that, to me, would indicate fear or submissiveness of some kind and it would probably need to be worked on in a very positive manner.

I am no expert, but i definitly think there is a big difference in the two instances.

Kirby gets the excited pee's when people come over. It is so embaressing! He is just over 1 year, so I am still hoping he will grow out of it. Now when people come, I convince him to go outside (usually with a cookie), this way he goes pee outside, then once the guests are in, i tell them to iqnore Kirby.. they do, and he wont pee, then he settles right down after 5 min, and then he can be petted.

My Harley peed when he was excited up untill the end (almost 7 years). Harley, on the other hand, only did it for the first few months, and now does't do it any more - he's just over 6 months old.
This isn't a trait only in boxers though, I've heard of it happening with many other breeds - both male and female.
What we did with Jake is put him outside when company came to the door, and then brought him back in once he'd peed outside.

I agree. The first time I ever saw my dad's yellow lab she peed all over herself and looked very scared. Carter peed for the first time when I got back from being gone for 5 days and I first saw him. He was running and jumping all around me dribbled a couple times less than a minute apart. But he was not acting submissive, just overly excited to see me since I had been away for so long.

I dont know about all happy pee dogs, but my rescue dog does this and it is totally a submissive thing. No clue what his history is, but when compnay comes over I tell them not to bend over at the waist and pet him while making eye contact. Those are the 2 things that will make him pee fast!

I've had lots of dogs in my life and I've had different breeds and males & females who did this. All of them grew out of it. My male Jack Russell did it while he was young. He still does it if he's in trouble! Bella does it but not like she used to. Her's is definately because she's happy! She does it in stores, at the vets and when she meets new people.

Zebedee has pee'd in the house whilst playing excitedly with the babble ball despite having gone to the pee probably only 15 ~ 20 mins before, so I think some dogs do pee when excited.

Max just started doing this when he had to stay over night at the vet for a procedure. He's 7 months and had not done it before. He only does it sometimes, only with certian people and only when he's really excited. I ask the vet about it and they said it was the subbmissive pee, but he's always happy when he does it and I don't think he knows that he did it. So I don't know about that. They said he would out grow it or it may just be a temp thing due to all of the change he has had lately.
