the main difference

Hi the main difference between the two is the way they control.
The halti pushes the nose down (like a mother dog would) for the unwanted behavior of pulling. The gentle leader puts pressure on the back of the neck instead, causing the dog to respond with his natural instinct of pulling against pressure, thus pulling back, rather than forward. He learns to walk with you rather than ahead of you. The halti is more likely to cause injury under the eyes if the fit isn't exact.

We had some success with a Halti for a little while, but our boxers eventually got to a point where they'd just turn around backwards and pull while shaking their head all over the place.

We now use a metal chain link collar that we got from the vet that has prongs that pinch their neck if they pull. The harder they pull the more it pinches. Sounds kinda mean, but works like a champ...

Might better go have a look at the rules of the forum. When they ask you to read them its a good idea to really do that!

In my limited experience the Halti is excellant! I can see where the dog may develop a tendency to turn completely around, but Ivan does not. If you try and rely on the tool to train, your results will be less than satisfactory.

While walking Ivan I developed a system of commands that he responds positively too. For instance: if he does begin to walk ahead of me I simply shorten the lease so that there is just the slightest pressure and say "easy". He will then slow down or stop until I'm in line with him. Now when I walk him without the halti he stays next to me and responds the same when he moves ahead.

Ivan also spends quite a few hours a week outside, off leash with me while walking our property, and the same commands work.

I use a Gentle Leader with Charlie Paper and I couldn't be happier with the improvements in his leash behavior. I know Halti & GL are similar & my boyfriend uses the Halti with his Staffy. I used to get so irritated on our walks, but now things have changed in that respect.

I ordered the Gentle Leader for Beau a couple of weeks ago and just put it on him in the house to see how he would react. He absolutely flipped out! He tried everything in his power to get it off. I had him sit and gave him treats, etc. for about 15 minutes and finally took it off so he wouldn't get too stressed out. I'm going to put it on him for a training lesson at the park next week and hopefully he'll get used to it!

My last boxer walked on the halti great no probs at all, however when i introduced Elvis to it he worked himself up so much I couldnt calm him down for ages. After many walks of having it on for a few mins then takign it off he got used to it, it definatly helps as he cant pull but i have to constanly take his mind of the fact he has it on otherwise he will try and get it off.

I generlly drive him to the local park so he jums straight out the car into the park rather than have to walk him on the lead, its an easy way out but stops me gettign stressed with him!

I just returned my gentle leader for a halti. Results have been much better. It has been proven in studies that because the "gentle" leader is supposed to be so tight(only on finger between the collar) can cause soft tissue and/or spinal damage. The halti is much looser(at least 2 fingers between collar is recomended) and seams to work better for me.

I used to put the gentle leader on tight, but loosened everything up. Jasmine and Hailey are not fond of it at all, but it's alittle better. Hailey every once in awhile will rear up on her back legs and with the two front paws start tearing at her muzzle trying to get it off...then I'l have to correct her. Jasmine just wants to rub her mug on anything possible.

Now things are alittle better because since we've been taking the girls to doggie daycare I put the gentle leaders on them. They have quickly figured out if I get the gentle leaders off the hook they are going to doggie daycare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They play so hard the get blisters between thier pads, but that's another thing.
