I just bought a Halti collar for my 9 month old. He loves to pull when going for walks and I didnt mind it until my finger got tangled and he almost pulled it off. Has anyone had any experience with the halti collar? Is there a big difference in the halti compared to the gentle lead. Thanks for the input.

i have a gentle lead and ive never experienced a problem like that... but im not quite sure as to what the difference between the gentle lead and the halti is... i had read on BW that people preferred the gentle lead to the halti so that's why i went with that choice...im not sure if this helped you at all ... but you can do a forum search for both items...there have been alot of posts about them on BW..good luck! :)

We have a Halti and it is a blessing! Some boxers seem to have trouble getting used to it; it sits right under their eyes and takes a bit before they may trust it. Dempsey J. was willing to give it a go, though, and we have had little trouble.

I think the biggest difference between the Halti and the Gentle Leader is that GL makes a product designed specifically for short-nosed breeds that is more comfortable for them. I think you usually have to get it through their website.

It is certainly possible for Dempsey J. to slip the Halti, but less likely if you clip the leash to the Halti ring and his regular collar. Take your time and introudce the Halti gradually, and you'll have less head shaking and resistance that will cause a slip. Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

The only real difference I noticed between the two is that the Gentle Leader is adjustable. I used the Gentle Leader on Kailee with success as far as stopping her from pulling, but she was not happy with it really. I have since in the past two months switched to the Sporn Halter on her and she loves it!! I find it works as well if not better than the Gentle Leader, and it makes Kailee happy. If she is happy, I am happy. :)

We bought one years ago for Sergeant when he was a puppy, we got it from our vet. I have just looked on the tag and it is called 'Promise'. It is very good as it doesn't have a cheek strap like a halter, it is just two straps, one that goes from a ring underneath the chin over the nose and one that goes from the same ring over the neck behind the ears. Both straps being adjustable. To get Sergeant used to it, we put it on and walked him around the garden for about 5 minutes. We did that for a few days then took him for a short walk with it on, he tried to paw it off a couple of times then he didn't bother.

I just returned my gentle leader for a halti. Results have been much better. It has been proven in studies that because the "gentle" leader is supposed to be so tight(only on finger between the collar) can cause soft tissue and/or spinal damage. The halti is much looser(at least 2 fingers between collar is recomended) and seams to work better for me.

I have used the haltie on my guys since they were pups, never had a problem, when its walk time they both give their noses to put the haltie on  never tried the GL? Curious to know how did you get your finger caught??
I find the haltie great! but not to be pulled or jerked! cud cause neck damage.

I've tried the Halti on Boo ..he did not like it ....took it back ...exchanged it for a GL .....the straps are not as wide as the Halti ...and it is adjustable ...I bought the large ..even tho it is to big ..I can adjust it as he grows .....The GL works so much better for Boo ...our walks are very enjoyable ..he walks so proud ...head up ...like look at me ...:) It has made a world of difference in our walks ...:)

You to be careful and make sure the straps are not to tight agaisnt under the eyes ...its very senitive there ...makes it very uncomfortable ...if you can place a finger between the straps & the nose ....its the right fit...!

Reading my post again I realize it does not sound right. Sly loved pulling as hard as he could on walks. That was before I got the Halti. Now that we use the Halti he is perfect on walks. Sorry about that I must have got ahead of myself while typing. woops., How I got my finger stuck? Well we were walking before we got the Halti and I had the leash kind wrapped around one of my fingers and some wrapped around my hand because I didnt want him so far out in front of me. Well he decided to take off real fast and hard and when he did it hurt my hand because it was wrapped around so I let it unwrap from my hand forgetting that it was also wrapped around 1 finger. Why I wrapped it around my finger I still dont know. Just one of those things.
