ID/Colitis
Wow, what a relief to hear we're not the only ones suffering through this. Sasha was diagnosed with mild colitis about a month ago. We were told that it is probably due to the development of food allergies. Don't know how that differs from IBD, but her main symptoms were soft stools with bright red blood upon completion (actually thought she had a hemorrhoid since she was straining toward the end of her "movement" (with little "output"). Like Rocky, Sasha has had bouts of loose stool over the past year, but never associated with blood.
Sasha was on Metronidazole for a week with no relief. She is now on Sulfasalazine (1/2 tablet (500 mg.), three times daily) for the next two weeks. Also just completed three dosages of Panacur for treatment of possible whipworms (fecal was negative, but it's difficult to detect these buggers). On a side note, boy is that stuff fun or what?? (If you're not familiar with it, it's a milky white product that is administered orally - consistency is like pepto bismol - real messy!) Final course of treatment is a hypo-allergenic diet for the next two months (Waltham Select Protein/Catfish & Rice). It's been less than a week and her symptoms have improved immensely. Most difficult part (aside from administering the panacur) is trying to keep her from eating our 15 year-old's food (Chopper's a chow mix) and keeping him from eating her new food (which is pretty pricey - $26.75 for 17 lbs.)!
I pray all goes well with Gypsy's cbc . . . keep us posted!
