Thank you for explaining that. It does sound like a lot to go through. I am wishing you and Gus all the best. While you are taking care of him, try to remember to take care of yourself as well. You will be in my thoughts.

I am so sorry to hear about Gus. I understand what you are going through. In January our 5 year, Sabrina, couldn't breath very well. After ultra sounds and xrays the vet found a mass on her lung. We too decided not to do anything because I did not want to put her through it and there are no guarantees. As long as she is not suffering. She takes Predisone every day, I call it her magic pill. The vet doesn't know how long she has, so each day is precious. Sabrina is happy and we love her every day more than the day before. So just love on your baby!

I went back to our regular vet and got some prednisone, and I have Gus on 20 mg. a day along with the lasix, which is to keep the fluid out of his lungs. He is doing much better and seems so much happier. Yesterday he jumped up on our king size bed with me, which is quite a feat asit is probably 3 feet off the floor, and his energy level is back to normal.

Magic pill or what, I am grateful to have more time with him and hope he hangs out for a while with us. It's been almost 2 months since he started with the cough. Thanks again and I will keep you all posted.

Our dog Abigale was not a boxer but she was diagnosed with lung cancer and given 6 months to live. She lived 3 + years before we had to send her across the Bridge.

Both you and Gus are in our prayers.

Sheri, I just caught this thread and am so sorry about Gus. I'm glad that you did go to UT to discuss your options so you were able to make an educated decision.

I work for a vet here in Maryville and we do chemo treatments. I have mixed feelings about it. I've seen lives prolonged but never an actual "cure". It's an emotional and heartbreaking decision and am truly sorry you're going through this.

Hugs,

Marilyn

Just wanted to check in...and give you an update!

Happily enough Gus seems to be hanging in there with us. He's still happy, eating, energetic, and being spoiled rotten with love and treats. I bought him some innova EVO and he is eating a mix of mostly the EVO and his old dog food (Nutro) since I read high protein is a good way to go with cancer.

His current pill regimine is 30 mg prednisone and 50 mg lasix. He is also on solatol 2x a day for his stageIII/VI heart murmur, which I think makes him lethargic at times, but it's probably a good idea he takes it easy since he coughs more when he's excited. He coughs up phlegm now almost daily. Other than that you wouldn't know he was sick. So strong he is. Thank you all for your advice with him. It has helped a lot more than you all know.

Bless your little trooper's heart!! Thanks for the update. It's good to hear that he is managing well with his meds, and that he's getting lots and lots of TLC. Continuing to think of Gus, and wishing for the best of days for him and his loving family. Hugs from Grunt and me. :)
