I want to thank everyone for their kind words of encouragement. It helps a lot to know there are other people out there that know how I feel about my dogs and how special they are...I think boxer owners are unique ...and I doubt most people who know us have any clue or understand the grief my husband I feel like you all do. Thank You.

Gus is home and back to his old self...he was not at all happy when I picked him up Thursday morning...slept all day....turned down treats...(it was hard giving him his pills since he wouldn't take any treats!) but he bounced back within two days. I almost wish I hadn't put him through all the tests ...CT scan, biopsy, Echo for his heart, etc. because it stressed him out, but I wanted to know exactly what was wrong with him. I was hoping for the best, that maybe my regular vet could be wrong and that he just had bronchitis or something. He is my first boxer and I felt I owed him that, knowing what exactly was wrong.

I haven't asked about how much time we have, I think I would rather not know. I just want to love and spoil him every day like we always have. We don't want to put him through chemo...the time could be better spent enjoying life with him than dragging him to the vet every week for the next 3 months. I will be talking to both vets this week to see about what to do next, for now he is comfortable and happy, coughs really only in the mornings and when he gets excited. I hope we have some good time together. I will keep you all posted.

Thank You all so much for caring about my Gus and you are all in my prayers as well.

Take one day at a time these boxers are amazing and they are strong willed. They love their homes and will stay much longer sometimes than predicted. I wouldn't give anything for all the time we had to spoil Rocky ( more so than he already was) they respond and fight to share each day with us. Prayers to you.....Hang in there and give Gus a big hug from us!

I am so sorry. This is the same thing that happened with our boy Killian. (He would have been ten years old last month). His was also metastatic and in-operable. We were devastated as he was so healthy up until he started coughing. We decided against chemo, as the vet said he could not be sure how much time it would even give us and Killian wouldn't understand us putting him through all that. He was put on prednisone and carafate (for his tummy) and we just loved on him and spoiled him for his last few weeks and made him yummy food and took lots of pictures. Again, I am so sorry, I know how hard this is for you.

Having never been through what you are going through, and many others on BW have, I can only imagine the agony of making a decision such as yours. Chemo? No chemo? The quality of our babies lives is so important to all of us and making a loving and informed decision is what it's all about. How lucky Gus is to have parents like you and your husband. If only love could make the bad thing go away. May the precious time that you have to share with your beloved boy be filled with making sweet memories full of hugs, kisses, cuddles, extra special spoiling, and just being together. Grunt and I send gentle hugs to Gus. Take care.

I previously posted that Quincy received chemo without any side effects. As I am reading replies, there have been mentions of multiple vet visits for this? I was given Quincy's chemo to take home. He took one pill and then had bloodwork done 10 days later. This was repeated 4 weeks later and was to continue every 4 weeks for a maxium of 6 treatments. Therefore, the chemo would only result in 6 extra vists to the vet tech for 5 mins over a period of 6 months. I am wondering at the difference?

Being the type of cancer it is (aggressive, lung carcinoma, 3 tumors with metastisis) his chemo would involve treatment with two medicines, every 3 weeks at the vet hospital, not in pill form, with bloodwork drawn up at 7 and 14 day intervals, and prior to each treatment , with 4 treatments total, provided his blood levels don't drop. Each round of chemo was quite expensive ($400-500 visit) and they said it may only slow down the tumor growth, not cure it, to give him more time.

At first I was hopefully surprised they would suggest this for a dog his age. Then I spoke to others who had put their dogs thru chemo and said they would never do it again, and to keep in mind it is a veterinary teaching hospital, and they like to do things for research purposes that don't always make the most sense.

After much thinking and agonizing, I just cannot justify doing the chemo with his age, heart murmur and disease, and how it has spread in his lungs. Good news is it is no where else yet, so we hopefully have some time. I love my boxer babies with all my heart but if he is going to pass eventually from the same thing I think it is selfish to prolong his life by such extensive measures with absolutely no guarantee it will work.

Thanks again for your words of comfort, they mean the world to me, you are all so wonderful to help and sympathize. Bless you all.
