Rocky is not very attatched to his toys and just wants to be the first get get attention...Mia on the other hand cannot be anywhere without her little toy chicken (a fuzzy beanie baby chicken). She mothers it, kills it, flings it into the air. If we are going anywhere she will look for it to take it along!

I wonder if it has to do with the way WE greet our dogs, because Avra does it only to my daughter and never to me or my husband

Indy does it, but Ava doesn't.

But, with Indy, it's a learned response. Before we got Ava, he'd run to greet people without a toy. When Ava arrived, all that changed.

Ava is much more insistent that she get the attention when someone arrives. She'll force herself between the guest and Indy. So, Indy resorted to running into the TV room and grabbing a toy as an offering to our guests.

He has refined the tactic to the point that when they see someone arriving, Ava will run to the door to greet them. Indy will select a toy, then wait at the door beside Ava.

When they come in, Ava will "sound off" to get attention, while Indy will stand in front of them, with his gift.

This began when Ava was a small puppy, and as we know, people seem to love puppies more than grown dogs. Well, maybe they don't love them more, but puppies seem to get more of our attention than older dogs.

It's the same as it is with babies. People love to fuss and coo over babies, but don't demonstrate the same interest once they get past the toddler stage.

Anyway, Indy soon figured this out, and after the first few people just had to hold, or show attention to the little white girl, he resorted to bringing an offering to our guests.

It works, because it usually provokes a chuckle or laugh, and they can't resist that pleading face, as he proffers his friendship in the form of some well gnawed toy.

Make no mistake, Indy is definitely the alpha. But, he is secure enough in his position that he will defer to her except in instances when it really matters, such as a squirrel that needs to be driven from their yard, or when something else needs to be barked at through the window. If she doesn't get behind him on her own, he'll put her in her place.

He is quite the gentleman however, he does it with attitude and an aggressiveness that stops short of violence, and she does get the message.

Kira used to do this with her giant rubber kong toy but she used to then drop it on top of your foot and that hurt a lot!!

Paisley does this. I've been wondering lately if any other boxers did this. First she'll greet us by beaning everywhere, trying to jump up on us, and licking us.. Then she'll go get one of two toys she does this with. One is a little cow, that used to play music until she soaked it and it wouldn't stop playing, the other is a yellow squeeky toy dog. She'll get them in her mouth and walk around the house and whine like she wants or needs something. She sometimes does this for a very long time after we've gotten home and settled. I wish I knew why she whines like she does though..

Samson does this but Delilah does not. Duchess (at the bridge) also did this. I think that it is so cute. If you try to take it, he will not give it up. He just wants to show you that he is excited that your are home, and he is so glad that you are giving him all of the attention that he wants.

strange - possesive?

Luke is starting to do this now too, with his Moo Cow (see pictures in gallery). When we come home he greets us with Moo. If we take him out, the first thing he does when he comes in the door is to go find his Moo. When he has it in his mouth he whines. Not sure what that means. I thought he wanted us to play with him but when we go to grab it he gets upset and snatches it out of your hand and runs away with it.

Another thing he did the other day was strange..... We have a hook at the front door where we hang his leash, harness, flashlight, car seatbelt, poop bags & towel. We were out at a movie and came home and he pulled all this stuff down (smashed the hanger in the process) and put everything on his bed and chewed on everything. Which is odd cause he is not a chewer.
This morning he grabbed a knapsack (which I used yesterday to put some of his things in to go watch the game with some friends) somehow he unzipped it and pulled out my school folder left it on the floor and took the knapsack to his bed. Seems to be very possessive with "his" things. I think it is because his last owner had 4 other dogs and he had to share everything with them.

It's funny because Clara doesn't grab a toy when she greets. She greets with her usual wooing and beaning. Now my lab, on the other hand, always grabs the first toy she see and runs around with her version of beaning and wooing. She woos with the toy in her mouth and it's just too funny. She's learned so much from her big sister. She acts just like a boxer!

Mason does this too but I thought he grabbed a toy as a learned behavior from his big sister Hannah. Hannah, who was a golden retriever, always picked something up and I always attributed it to her breed and she was doing her job (retrieving)....very interesting to see that it is a boxer trait in a lot of cases too! :)

Tyson does this, but it doesn't have to be a toy. He will grab whatever is available and woowoo while he carries it aroun. Usually its a shoe or a dog bowl. I can't tell you how many times I have had to go and collect shoes from the yard or root around the house looking for dog bowls :) Nick doesn't pick anything up. He just kidney beans and jumps up and down like a pogo stick. Gotta love em!
