I'm new at this so I hope I am doing it right! My Baxter is 3 1/2 months old now. Potty training is slow, but steady. My question--when should my pup start letting me know he has to go??? Is there something I could be doing to teach him to let me know. Right now he understands when I tell him "Outside, potty" and he'll head for the door, but he hasn't yet come to me when he has to go. If I don't get him out, he goes where he is! Any ideas???

In his own way, your pup will always 'tell' you when he needs to go and no doubt he's already doing that. It may be pretty subtle signs, like sniffing or circling, but they'll be there ;) At 3.5 months, its still up to you to make sure that you notice and get him outdoors - so that he'll learn that pottying is an outdoor-only activity. With vigilence and consistency, you can expect him to 'get' the outdoor-only thing by around 6 months.

But I guess what you're really asking is when is he going to give you a loud and clear signal like barking or scratching at the door when he needs to go. Well, actually not all dogs do - some just head for the door and wait for you to notice. If you want to train him to do let you know, you could look into bell training. There's plenty of previous threads that will give you lots of information with a search. Good luck :)

Roxi is 5 1/2 months old and she pretty much circles or sits in front of me and sighs and shakes her head at me. I hope that your pup lets you know some how!!

You need to be watching them; realize that they usually have to go right after they wake up and right after they eat (no. 2). Sometimes it won't be more than they run over to the door and run away. I take her right out then and tell her "outside potty!" I am finding when there are accidents, they are right in front of the door, so I feel like she is getting the message but it's my fault that I don't notice her little signals which can be kind of quick and subtle. Hang in there!

Thanks folks! Baxter does bark when he wants up on the bed or up on my lap(a feat that will be a bit awkward soon :D) S0---i guess i'll be patient and more observant. My last boxer barked when he had to go and I don't remember really having to do anything to make that happen. But they are all unique in their own ways, aren't they!
