Goodbye, my puppy.

We said goodbye to our beloved Juno last Thursday. He was just shy of 6 years old, still so young yet diagnosed with heart disease last July and given only 6 months to live. We saw a specialist, had him on all the right medications, had his heart rate checked every three months. He lasted 10 total; always exceeding expectations. That's you, Juno.
Our recent move was just too much for him, in the space of a week he deteriorated so quickly. His breathing was so labored and fast, he coughed non stop for all the fluid in his lungs, a symptom of the heart disease. My poor puppy. We couldn't keep him in pain. He was no longer himself, every moment focused on trying to get enough oxygen. He couldn't eat, he couldn't sleep, he couldn't catch his breath. We had to let him go, his pain was too great.
My heart is broken. He was my first child and my husband's first child. I found him on a breeder's website on my way back from a deployment in Iraq. We picked him up a month before our wedding thus he was older than our marriage; this is something my husband loved to point out. Our new home is still new, his paw prints are not as deeply ingrained here as our old home, but I still see him in the corner of my eye occasionally. I still almost ask our girl boxer if both she and Juno need to go outside, but I catch myself in time. I still stare at the single feeding station when there were once two. His favorite toys lay unused around our house. My poor puppy.
You were such a great part of our lives, we did everything with you. I feel so lost without you. The emptiness is palatable and bitter. I do not regret our decision to relieve you of such great pain, but I have such a great hole in my heart with your absence. I do try to focus on the great joy you brought us, and perhaps in time that will outweigh my heartbreak. But for now, all I can think of is the great void in my life now that you are gone, across the bridge waiting for us.
I love you, Juno.

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Juno! Six years is way to young to die. At least now Juno is pain free and running at the Rainbow Bridge. Godspeed Juno!

Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers. It's been a week today and we are just taking it one day at a time. It still hurts so much but I feel a small kernel of peace knowing our sweet boy is no longer in pain. Every day I say his name and talk to my husband about a happy memory we have of him. My husband took his ashes to his favorite lake on memorial weekend where we took both of our boxers swimming every summer. Rest well, dear Juno. We miss you so much puppy.
