Good dry dog food

I use Eagle Pak for my Boxers and they thrive on it. My 18 month old male has the softest, most velvety shiny coat I have ever seen on a boxer. I have tried other kibble but it seems to double his "output" which makes me believe that he doesnt' get the same nutritional benefit from them.

I've not seen that brand in the U.S. Perhaps it is only in Canada? Or sometimes, it is the same as a brand in the U.S. but they change the name for Canada for some reason. (They do that with car models I notice.)

I use Nutro Max Puppy dry kibble for Maggie. She loves it and her elimination is good, much better than IAMS or ProPlan, the other two dry foods I tried with Maggie. I like Nutro because it has NO byproducts in it at all. I am looking for something that has fewer grains and more meat than Nutro for when Maggie is an adult. I would like to get her away from a lot of grain intake. I think they cause more problems for a dog, like yeast infections, allergies, etc. than a more traditional "in the wild" type diet such as a BARF diet or such. Dogs are after all carnivors and in the wild, they don't eat many grains.

Just my opinion.

Oh and if anyone knows of a kibble with less grain content than Nutro, let me know. THanks.

..another dry I recommend...

..is Hill's Science Diet. Jake has a very sensitive stomach and doesn't have 'quite' the gas problem others report (but he definately carries the boxer trait)!! Now I'm not sure if he is not so bad due to the food or just his system.

Anyway, I didnt like the two that you mentioned either, one was too rich and the other he didnt like. The Science Diet has worked out very well.

Hi there,
I tried Science Diet but it doubled Trapper's um...output shall we say.

In terms of "nuclear" tendencies, I have learned that peanut butter has a Cherynobl(sp?) effect on boxers and now I avoid the whole unpleasant situation.

Thanks Julie for that info. That is helpful. I have a couple of copies of the Journal which someone gave me when I first got Maggie. I forgot about them since I found so much good info on this site. :) Anyway, I'll have to find them a subscribe.

I think I'm leaning towards Innova for an adult food for Maggie. It is readily available here so that's always a concern. I don't see those other brands in my pet store. But they always have recommended Innova to me. So, I'm thinking that's a pretty good bet for an adult food for Maggie when I switch her from puppy formula.

I just looked at Innova web site. There food looks pretty good. I switched to Nutro because my cousin suggested it and we wanted something without by products. I may have to venture out this weekend and pick up a small bag of Innova and see how Megan likes it.

Thanks for all these links. I have just begun investigating alternatives to Iams since joining on this board. I never really looked into the differences in dog food, and my vet merely asked what I was feeding them, but did not suggest I try something different... I don't think I could stomach BARF, not to mention Spencer, the pig, would gobble his up and start horning in on everyone eles's grub!

Oh, and peanut butter has no effect on my babies other than making them drool a lot :)
