I would definitly say adopting an older dog (3 or 4) would be better than a puppy. No matter how sweet and loving they are those puppy feet can really do some damage especially to a baby or small child. My girl is 4 and when kids come over she is Mrs. mellow (usually she is a psycho doggie), she's really good with old people also but when she was little she was not very polite and even though she was only playing she did manage to whack a few kids with those paws of hers.

As for waiting until after the baby is born, that's really up to you guys. You have plenty of time for the dog to settle in before the baby comes, but on the other hand we have had some people here on BW who's wives had a really hard time handling a dog and a newborn while hubby was away at work.

If you do decide to adopt before the baby comes, you might want to consider taking a neighbor and their child/children with you to the shelter to test the dogs response to kids (we've had people do that at our shelter).

Also, in addition to what Monique said about boxers getting lonely without people around (totally true by the way), they are high up on the list of breeds that get stolen quite frequently. So leaving one outside in a run you may also run the risk of a thief taking the dog.

In any event, good luck with whatever you choose to do and welcome to Boxer World.

Thanks Donna,

Sounds like good advice from yet another "Boxer," owner. That's the only kind of advice I want to here not hear-say from someone that doesn't:mad:! So you work at a shelter huh....sounds cool. Well accept for the part about animals not being adopted soon enough:(. I work for a company that does testing on concrete and soils...ect. and we just recently worked on an animal shelter here in town and it killed me to here all those dogs barking in there:( . They just sounded so misrable. I love all animals...doesn't matter to me what size they are big or small, ugly or mean, scary or furoucious(sp?)! I remember when I was just a little scrapper I always wanted to have a pet monkey.....no I'm not taking this some where else, get your minds out of the gutter:rolleyes: :p only kidding! I hate going to zoos though!!! Yeah there educationnal I guess, not really. I'ld rather watch something on the discovery channel or animal planet to find out how all the different animals live:D!
Anyway thanks again for all the great respones and thank you for the nice welcome Donna!

Here's just my opinion

I have two boxer's, one 4/12 years old and a 18 week old pup. I also have two teenage children. Boxers are wonderful with children.

Do you think you wife or you would be up to "PuppyHood" with a new infant? I know that Carson, my pup, is about to kick my butt as far as training and just being a puppy.

In the end you will decide what is right for both of you. It might be a better idea to get an older boxer. Who really knows until you jump in with both feet.

Kinda like the saying goes.... if you wait to have children until you have enough money to raise them then you'll never have kids.

Just my thoughts

Thanks for the advice! I think my wife and I have made our decision for now, to wait on getting a boxer:rolleyes:. We will start looking again after our baby is born in June:Dfiestaicon ! I have taken all of your advice to heart and it has helped us out a lot. As much as we would like to have a Boxer like yesturday :D, we will put it off for now. Besides work has been kind of slow for me right now, because of this terrible weather that were having in northern California right now. Well, it was starting to get slow anyway before all the bad weather actually:mad: ! The price I pay for working with a company that deals with constructionsmashicon. So I'll have to get some advice in late June or the beginning of July, for where to head to for adopting a boxer. We'll probably lean more towards adopting from the NCBR, simply because we'll have a better chance of getting a dog that is already potty trained. However, I'm not ruling out trying to find a puppy in our local newspaper though. I just think adopting a boxer from the NCBR would feel a little better inside......you know what I meancool2icon.

Happy Holiday's to all you Boxer owners!

I'm glad you were able to make an informed decision on what will be best for you. Definitely go with NCBR. Let me know when you're ready, and I'll help you adopt! :D

Back again to this great site!!!!

Well hello all! Hope everyones 2003 year is going well so far! My wife and I have reached the half way point....or I should say she's reached the half way point in her pregnancy:rolleyes: ! So it's all down hill from here. We had the ultra-sound done the other day and were told that everything looked greatcool2icon ! I'm know contimplating the idea of getting two boxers when the time is right! My wife saw a puppy boxer the other day at work and she just fell in love with it....she said it was the cutest thing that she had ever seen......besides me ofcourse:rolleyes: ! I know we'll have plenty of room in our backyard for the two Boxers for "playing" and like I said in a past post there's a park right down the road for them to really be able to stretch there legs and really get some good exercise as well as me too! I know Monique will be our hookup for when the times comes to pick out the right dogs for us to adopt! However, first thing first though....our baby and getting settled with the new one......yeah we didn't find out the sex, wanted to keep it a surprise! Kind of like when dogs have puppy's....you never know what your gonna get...or is that a box of chocolates.....only kidding :p :D !

Ok, Since I have been there done that I will give you my opinion on getting a boxer before a baby. I got my first boxer in Feb 1995, I had my first baby in May 1995. It was the best thing I ever did! So many people were telling me I was so stupid for getting a dog when I was expecting, but it was the best thing I could've done EVER! My girl was great with my baby and I had her pretty much trained by the time the baby was here. I have one quick story for you and then I will let ya go. My baby was 2 weeks old and I was on maternity leave from work so I met my hubby for lunch and rushed back home to feed the baby. Britnee (my boxer baby) was in the back yard and grandma saw that I was home and let her in. I was in the bathroom when Brit came down the stairs and the baby was in the other room at the bottom of the stairs in her car seat wide awake waiting to eat. Brit came to me and got black dirt all over my hands and legs. I washed her muzzle off and walked out to get the baby before she started screaming. I look at the baby and she had black dirt all over her face, feet-she had white booties on, and in her hair as well as her cute little new summer outfit. I was laughing so hard took a few pictures and off I went to change and wash the baby. So, this being said I will always tell anyone who asks about getting a puppy before a baby is born YES!!! Brit is now 8 years old and we have baby #4 on the way and I am not worried about her at all. Don't get me wrong Baylee is good with my kids too, but Brit loves em when they are small (probably cuz they don't insist on her playing with them yet) she always sleeps under the crib and sits next to me when I feed them. She even sits by the swing or bouncy chair when the baby is in it. So, if you get a pup early enough to get them trained before the arrival then I say go for it. Hey, obviously this is only my opinion. Good Luck, sorry I got so long winded! :D

No prob Jaimie! Thx for the great story....it must have been to cute! We're still debating on how old we want to try for, but I'm sure that will be one of the things we will discuss with Monique come adoption time!
