Boxer Insane
I would definitly say adopting an older dog (3 or 4) would be better than a puppy. No matter how sweet and loving they are those puppy feet can really do some damage especially to a baby or small child. My girl is 4 and when kids come over she is Mrs. mellow (usually she is a psycho doggie), she's really good with old people also but when she was little she was not very polite and even though she was only playing she did manage to whack a few kids with those paws of hers.
As for waiting until after the baby is born, that's really up to you guys. You have plenty of time for the dog to settle in before the baby comes, but on the other hand we have had some people here on BW who's wives had a really hard time handling a dog and a newborn while hubby was away at work.
If you do decide to adopt before the baby comes, you might want to consider taking a neighbor and their child/children with you to the shelter to test the dogs response to kids (we've had people do that at our shelter).
Also, in addition to what Monique said about boxers getting lonely without people around (totally true by the way), they are high up on the list of breeds that get stolen quite frequently. So leaving one outside in a run you may also run the risk of a thief taking the dog.
In any event, good luck with whatever you choose to do and welcome to Boxer World.

! I have taken all of your advice to heart and it has helped us out a lot. As much as we would like to have a Boxer like yesturday :D, we will put it off for now. Besides work has been kind of slow for me right now, because of this terrible weather that were having in northern California right now. Well, it was starting to get slow anyway before all the bad weather actually:mad: ! The price I pay for working with a company that deals with construction
. So I'll have to get some advice in late June or the beginning of July, for where to head to for adopting a boxer. We'll probably lean more towards adopting from the NCBR, simply because we'll have a better chance of getting a dog that is already potty trained. However, I'm not ruling out trying to find a puppy in our local newspaper though. I just think adopting a boxer from the NCBR would feel a little better inside......you know what I mean
