Three of my all time favorite books...

A Widow For One Year, John Irving. Great book, a family saga. I like all of John Irving's books, but this is my favorite of his.

Memoirs of a Geisha, Arthur Golden. Has to be my favorite book. It's fiction, but you'd swear it's true. Beautifully written, set in Japan. My mother, who reads at least a book a week, thanks me often for referring her to this book.

East of Eden, John Steinbeck. Another family saga, long but well worth it.

Two authors that generally have shorter books (less than 300 pages), but still good reads are Anita Shreve and Nicholas Sparks.

I love this thread, I'll have to give some of the books suggested a try!

Wanted to add that I just finished David Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty One Day. Absolutely hilarious!! He also has a new book out, Dress Your Family in Courdory and Denim, which I haven't yet read.

I just checked out The Nanny Diaries from the library and am starting it tonight. It looks like it'll be a great book, thanks for recommending it. I'll let you know how I liked it.

One of my favorite authors of all times is Gerald Durrell. He is a naturalist who used to go on animal collecting expeditions (long time ago) but is a total conservationist. He ended up opening his own zoo. He is funny, witty and sarcastic at times. His best work is the Corfu Trilogy: "My family and other Animals", "Birds, Beasts and Relatives" and "The Garden of the Gods". They are all about the time when he was around 10 years old and lived in the greek island of Corfu, with his entire family (who are all nuts!). It has family craziness combined with his experiences with animals. So good.

Ps. He owned a boxer named "keeper" when he had his zoo, and there is also a children's book about him.

I've been going to the library to get books. James Patterson has several books. The Alex Cross series is good and he has one called Nicholas Diary is very good.

i'm reading harry potter right now, i love those books even if they are for kids!

I am an avid reader as well. A couple of books that i have read in the last year or so that really stand out are:

Pillars of Earth by Ken Follet

this book is set in the early 14th century? and it follows a stone mason's family and a church monk and covers the building of a cathedral. This was a very moving, informative book that covered polictical and socio-economic beliefs at that time period while still being entertaining plot wise.

Vagabond and The Archers Tale by Bernard Cornwell

This book is set during the first war between brittan and france. it follows an archer in the brittish army and has a little "quest for the holy grail" theme running through it. Cornwell writes beautifully and makes you feel like you are witnessing the events in person.


The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon (6-7 books)

This series is very very good. It is set at about the time of the scottish rebellion on england. The first book actually takes you through the wars fought in the movie Braveheart. Actually, william wallace makes a cameo appearence in the first book. There is a little time-travel involved with the main character, and the central plot is a love story. Oh, but the history is amazing! A definite read.

I would also recommend the Jean Auel series that was posted earlier, they are also good books!

i'm reading harry potter right now, i love those books even if they are for kids!

I am too...:p I'm in the middle of the fourth one right now, and I actually really enjoy them!

My all time favorite book is When the Wind Blows by James Patterson. He's just recently came out with the sequel called The Lake House. They're both wonderful!

I'm also a big fan of fantasy books, and I really enjoy the Dragonlance books by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, even if they are hard for me to find!

DH loves the author Robert Jordan. He's on the 9th book in the Wheel of Time series.

Hope you find some good books to read.

I read the Harry Potter series last summer and loved them! I know, I know.... but they are actually really good if you give them a chance.

Camille- I just finished The Nanny Diaries and LOVED it. I couldn't put it down; it was really addicting to read about those crazy lives. I wanted to cry for Grayer at the end... Thanks for the recommendation.

For a fun read, try any of Jennifer Crusies books. They are quite humorous. I have read all of them...sure wish she could write faster!!:D:

I just read She's Come Undone, by Wally Lamb. That was a good one.

I like to read just about anything, and I'm always looking for a good book!!
