Adelle,

Since you are using "human type" glucosamine & condroiten supplements, do you know what dosage per pound is recommended?

For Rocky who is 67 lbs, I need to give him 1500 mg/day for the first 6 weeks and then drop to 750mg/day for maintenance.

The following site has some good info about pet arthritis, treatments... You'll also find out which brands of glucosamine product they recommend for pets and the respective dosage.

I just hope my baby boy will get better soon, he is very stiff especially in the morning.

Thanks to Karen and everyone else who responded. I have been reading up on arthritis and the links were alot of help. Anyone know how to tell a ten year old Boxer that her body isn't what it used to be and that she needs to start taking it easy?

I put my dog on it 2 years ago. 2 pills for the first month 1 pill everyday after that. The vet said my baby was beginning to show signs of arthritis and he also had a little limp. Guess what 2 years later no limp and the arthritis has actually improved.
The vet said his x rays are better than they have ever been.
You can buy a generic instead of purchasing cosequin which is very expensive. Any store that has a pharmacist will have it and herb stores sell it too. I look for the generic that has glucosemine & magnesium..this is what my vet reccomended.
Good Luck!

Kenny, I definitely don't know how to keep a Boxer from running around and playing. I'd like for Rocky to take it easy for a while but he is constantly playing with Maxxie. However, watching them so happy makes me happy too. The important thing is that they enjoy their lives.

I started Casey on Glucosamine about two weeks ago. It's hard for me to tell if it has made a signifigant impact because her limp has been on a "come and go" basis. She is only limping after laying down for a while. So far so good:D . I will keep everyone posted.

This message is for VTbxrFan.
How is the recovery going? I have been doing glucosamine and ascription on my 2yr old. He needs to have knee surgery. I hoping this will help him. I want to try glycoflex II instead.
How do you keep him down with another young dog around?
Are you glad you did it? I'm afraid that the quality of his life will be worse or even the same. It only slows down the arthritis, and will still be stiff and lame.
How long did you do the supplements before you decided to go thru with it?
I would love to chat with you.

Hi......I rarely get a chance to sit and read post......BUT I AM DESPERATE.........My boxer.....Angus is 4 years old and has been diagnosed with a torn ACL in his knee........it started out with a tear and then , I guess, it is now completely torn.....We started him on glucosamine right when we found out it was a tear and now after two weeks, he seems about the same, maybe alittle better. Anyway, my vet says he should have surgery, but it is up to me......If he has surgery, or if he doesn't, it takes about three months of Angus doing NOTHING....I notice someone asked "HOw do you keep a Boxer from being rambunctuous??" It is very hard. My vet said that if we kept Angus still and from taking walks and all the things he loves it would get better.......So far, it hasn't.
I don't know what I am getting at here , I am very upset about the whole thing.
My vet said that the tear will heal with or without surgery and I am not sure what to do?? I told him I would think about it another week......I have heard many good things about Glucosamine and was hoping it would make a difference in his prognosis........without surgery he will have arthritis and with surgery he will have arhritis.......I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO.....Give it more time or just have the surgery.......If he has surgery he cannot talk walks or do anything and we have to keep him quiet.....for three months.....with surgery....he cannot take walks and we have to keep him quiet for three months........Am I rambling?????? LOL....sorry.........somebody help me.....THANKS FOR LETTING ME RAMBLE ON.......
