Giving vaccinations at home

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone here vaccinates their own pets at home. I was looking at a catalog where you could buy the vaccines/syringes. Certain states require a vet to write you a prescription for the needles. I live in NY, which is a state which requires a vet to give you a prescription. I stopped by my vet's office today and was told that only veternarians can give vaccinations, and they refused to give me a prescription for needles. So I was just wondering if anyone else has run into this problem, or if anyone vaccinates their own pets.

My aunt used to, but she was a vet's assistant so she had a good idea of what she was doing. As for me, I'm not brave enough to even think about it. I would be afraid that I'd put the needle in the wrong place or that I'd hurt my baby. Some things are just better left to the pros I guess. That's my own opinion anyway!!

I have seen those catalogs too, but I am too afraid to do that myself. Besides I am a total wimp when it comes to needles and blood. I could never be a nurse :LOL:

Yes, I used to when I had small dogs. I didn't like to, but it saved a bunch of money. The vet still had to give the rabies shot. The one I did was called a 7 way shot. (7 different vaccines in one shot). It had to be kept cold. I bought it at a store in Dallas called Canine Commisary that sells only dog related supplies. You did not need a prescription for it. Seems to me it cost about $12.00 but I'm sure it's a little higher now. The needle was free :eek:

I do not vaccinate from home because it is risky. The risk is that the vaccinations that you purchase are much less likely to be fresh, and therefore much less likely to be effective. For me personally, I just refuse to cut corners when it comes to the health of my pups, and I would recommend to you and anyone else that they take their pups to the vet for their vaccinations. Even though it costs more, it is a small percentage of what you should expect to pay over the course of your dog's life.

I disagree with it being risky, if you get bad vaccines, you have a bad supplier. All vaccines have a use-by-date on them just like your milk. Also, my dog gets less stressed out by me doing it at home, then dragging her into the vets.

You are absolutely right!
If you order vaccines and are worried about their shipment; you can purchase extra coolers and ice packs. Also, vaccines are shipped at the beginning of the week so that they are not stuck some where over the weekend and such during transit.

There is NOTHING risky about the freshness of vaccines upon the arrival of receiving them.

I would recommend to anyone that if you want to do it yourself; learn how to either by reading or from someone else who has done it.

Just because a licensed vet doesn't administer them doesn't mean that you are going to throw your animal into poor health!
