Help!! Yesterday morning Gina (7 month old Boxer/Mystery Big Dog Mix) started to pee blood. I am sooo scared. She could not stop peeing and blood was just dripping from her. Poor baby, she is finally housebroken and kept running outside because she thought she was doing something bad. Took a urine sample to the Vet and three long hours later they called and said she had crystals in her urine. He put her on antibiotics and a terrible looking/smelling prescription dog food (Hills Prescription S/P). Thank God, this morning the blood has lessen (I stayed up all night watching her..so please forgive me if this is a little sloppy) but she is still straining. Vet could not offer any explanation for this and said that he was 'concerned' because her urine ph was around 9 and should be about 7. He really scared me because he did said this could be a problem with her liver or a genetic kidney problem. I feed her Eagle Pack (did a lot of research on food when we got her) and feel pretty confident that this is a high quality food). She had terrible diarreah (sp) and gas on Nutro so we switched. She also gets a cup of canned (no salt Vegs. each day and 2 apples and carrots (her primary treats). I am so worried that this is something I may have caused because of her diet (even though the canned vegs. say no salt could there be?. Vet said the food she is on (the terrible looking precription stuff) is the only thing she can have for the next 10 days. He warned me that she would be real hungry while on it and this morning she was so sad after she ate. She is hungry. I am giving her some watermelon. Any suggestions? Has anyone else been through this? It is so awful and frightening to see blood running down the sweet legs of one of our babys and I really am so scared. Thanks so much.

Poisonous foods

Just the other day, I had a horrible scare with Cassius when he ate some onions (they can cause anemia). So, I printed out a list of some plants and foods that are poisonous to dogs. When you feed her apples, the seeds can be toxic while the fruit itself isn't. I don't know about watermelons, but it might be something to look into. If a dog eats onions they can begin to pee blood. Anyway, it is something to be aware of. Many seeds, leaves of foods are poisonous while the fruit or vegetable itself isn't. Also a lot of household plants can cause a dog to become very sick. Hope this helps.

I hope Gina starts to feel better, we will be thinking of you.angelicon

Gina Update

Thanks so much for your concern and advice! Gina is doing better (thank God). She is still taking her antibiotics and eating that awful smelling/looking prescription food. She is soooo hungry. Both of us can't wait until she can have her regular food again. I am concerned about her eating 'strange' things ie., tree branches, grass and other stuff she gets into in the yard. We watch her pretty carefully but, I think all of you know how baby Boxers are!! My prayer now is that when she is done with her meds. and back on regular food this will not re-occur. Again, thanks so much for your concern and caring. It is a real blessing to have all of you 'out there'.

One thing to discuss with your vet is what
changes to make in the diet long-term.
I had a similar problem and my vet wanted
me to switch permanently to $cience Diet.
I was feeding Wellness, made from human grade
ingredients, and really didn't want to give him
the equivalent of floor sweepings instead (check
the ingredients to see why they're so hungry :( )

Holistic friends told me that the main cause of
struvite crystals is local tap water, and to switch
to distilled (or highly filtered) water. Sometimes
it really is just the local water source, as I've learned
from talking to others whose dogs were affected
in one home and not another.

If the pH continues to be high, you can add a
tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the food
as well. This might enable you to continue to
feed the good food over the long run.

However, you need to clarify exactly what kind
of crystals they are, and whether vinegar would
exacerbate or help the problem. Getting some
dip sticks to run the tests at home is probably
the most cost effective way to do it until you're
comfortable.

Great advice! Thank you so much. I use filtered water but, not AlWAYS. I will now, though. Does anyone know where one can purchase the strips you mentioned to check the urine ph?
