George has only one testicle

So far only one testicle has dropped with George. He will be 10 weeks tomorrow. Obviously I can not show him if it stays this way (I guess the ear question was a mute point) but I am concerned about this from a medical perspective. I know he should be neutered but what about "leaving it there". I forgot to ask the vet about this. I know there is a higher risk of cancer if not neutered but do they remove them (sorry for the ignorance). Will it come down at this point? What should I be concerned about? If he needs to be neutered then when should this be done?

Janine, there is a chance it could still drop. Can you see it at all? If not, your vet may be able to feel if the testicle is on it's way down. Ruben dropped one later than the other and gave me a few weeks of worry (the things we worry about  )

Yes, when neutering, the vet should remove both testicles. It may cost a little more than a standard neuter if they have to 'look' for the retained one. The recommended age for neutering will vary depending on the person you talk too :) I think the general concensus is around 6 months of age, but some vets will neuter as young as 6 - 8 weeks.

Will be hoping for the best with George.

thanks for the information, Sharon. I remember reading that post and wondering what in the heck they were talking about. Now I know, the things we learn here at Boxerworld! I still only see one but he goes to the vet tomorrow and hopefully we will hear good news.

Hi Janine

I hope everything works out for George, but if it's not there by now, it doesn't look good :(

Just out of interest, which testicle is undescended, his left or right? 99% of cryptorchids have the right testicle missing. If the right testicle descends first, there is a good chance the left one will follow.

Good luck!

Can you tell by just looking??????

 I have never touched or really paid any attention. I see what APPEARS TO BE small testicles but how many ...who knows?

educate me on this one....what should a owner of a male 14 week old pup do?????????

Sit with your puppy on the floor, facing you. Gently lift up his front so that he is standing on his back legs, facing you. Gravity usually causes the testicles to drop lower in the scrotum, making it easy to see them. If you can't see them, then you can palpate the area GENTLY with your fingers. It shouldn't be too hard to feel two small testicles. Sometimes the testicles float up and down between the scrotum and inguinal (groin) area. If you can't feel one or both testicles in the scrotum, gently palpate a little higher up and you might feel them up there. But don't dig around looking for it if you can't feel it. If that's the case, let the vet do the searching.

If your puppy is accustomed to being nursed on his back, you should easily be able to see his testicles as he lays relaxing in your arms. But don't try this if he's uncomfortable on his back because tensing up could cause the testicles to be sucked up into the inguinal area making it difficult to see them.

I hope this has helped.

If you'd like to see how undescended (and normal) testicles are removed, here is a link to some pictures of a dog being neutered.

BTW, Zsara if you're puppy did have an undescended testicle, it's more than likely that your vet would have picked it up during the routine vet check at the time of vaccination.

But it wouldn't hurt for you to check all the same :)

Unfortunatly, when we got Maximus it was our first boy and didnt look at the testicles. The next day my vet brok the news to us, We were going to return him but I fell in love before I did. Maxis father only had 1 testicle so we were hoping that his would drop my vet said give it to a year he'll b a year Nov. 20 and no luck im going to have him neutered now. They say if you leav them up there it cn cause cancer so no risk will be taken for my baby boy.
Good luck I hope the other one drops but take some time and see.

No good news from the vet, still not there. My husband took him in and he said the vet was a little "miffed" at the breeder. Since we bought him "sight unseen" with only pictures we had no opportunity to check. I am trying to think she would not have sold him full price knowing but she had to know since he had a vet check days before he came home (I paid for it too:( ). I wish she would have told me. I had already fallen in love with him since I have been following his progress since birth and I do have a wonderful pup with a good background who I still plan on working with in obedience.

Thanks BoxerKay and others...

I attempted to find out and felt maybe 1 testicle. Either they are really tiny or there is only one. Blade who will be 17 weeks next Monday...has been to the Vet many times who has said nothing about it being a problem.

The puppy is asleep right now so I will check again when he awakens.
