for anyone that has used a gl, how long did it take your dog to accept it? i was also wondering if i had to use it for life? my male is really getting strong and i get tired of wrestling with him all the time. he is about 80 pounds now and strong. im not a little guy myself (6'5'' 245), but it wears on me at time to try and get him to cooperate with me. he hates the leader more than anything but after 2 days finally decided to walk with it. any suggestions?

yes!

We use a GL on our female and it's the best thing since sliced bread. If you use the GL to train her how to walk on a leash and heel, then you won't need to use it for life. It works a thousand times better than any choke collar, especially the spikey choke collars.

At what age did you start training her with the GL? Also, does it help with her jumping up? Pokey is getting so big so quick he is hard for me to control. I was thinking about trying it also.

Oh ya, the GL is awesome!!! It only took a minute for Lou to completely STOP pulling. The second I put it on he was like a whole new dog. Sure, he tries to get it off by rubbing his face in the bushes, every chance he gets... but it's so good for pulling. I've used it for a couple of years now, and couldn't live without it. Rollerblading, trips to petsmart, etc. are a breeze now. I can't say that when I have him on his collar without the GL that he doesn't pull, because he does!! But with it on, he doesn't. I just use both depending on what I'm doing.

Tae acted possessed with the GL on. It made her nuts and she constantly tried to pry it off with her paws or rubbed her nose against things to push it off. I finally discarded it after a month and bought a sensation harness. No problems adjusting to the sensation harness and it helped immediately. If you have no success with the GL check out www.softouchconcepts.com. They make the harnesses to special order. It took three weeks to receive mine last June.

If I remember correctly, the instructions for the GL say to get the dog used to it by putting it on them for short periods of time and then gradually increasing the time as they get used to it(i.e. at HOME before you try taking a walk). I have one for my Boxer and my AmStaff and they work great! I would strongly suggest obedience training as well. I believe there is an article on this board somewhere about the GL and how to acclimate your dog to it.

I think gl are a gift from heaven. both of my rescue boys have used them. My older one will walk nice on a leash without it now, but my pup still uses it and still will try and fight it off his face. Have you tried an obedience class. My first rescue learned to walk nice on a leash after he went through. My Chipper will start obedience on March 8th and I hope it will help with his leash walking.

So far so good

I just bought a GL for Gregory last night. I was tired of him pulling on the leash and choking himself. He made such a nasty noise when choking, I was getting all sorts of looks. Well, I put the GL on him and he went crazy. Then he calmed down and I gave him a femur bone I purchased just for this. After he was calm I praised him and took him out to potty. He didn't pull, chase the cat or anything else. He was a perfect gentleman! He does try to paw it off, but these episodes are relatively short. I take him in and took the collar off. I fed him while wearing the collar this morning: trying to associate it with good things. He did fine. So far it is a wonderful tool. I hope it lasts.
