I have also gotten "does your dog bite?" and "is that a muzzle?", but normally if I say no, it is a gentle leader people get it (the name says it all). If they still look confused I say it is like a horse halter or use the phrase from the package that it is like having power steering for your dog. My dog is so much calmer on it that I think people are less afraid of her and now people tell me they are going to try it with their dogs. Just think of it as another chance to educate people on better ways to work with their dogs.

the GL is fantastic!! my 2 yr. old girl took a little while to get used to it, but now it's working great. not only does she not pull, but she listens to me so much better!

Both of mine wear GL when I walk them together. I weigh 95lbs and together my two weigh about 130 so they must be under control. It depends on your dog as to how much time is needed. I used lciker training to get mine used to it. For a week I would ltouch it to their noses, click treat, praise. Then I would loop it around their nose several times a day, click, treat, praise. Finally I would put it on, snap it shut, remove it immenidately, click, treat, praise. Lastly, I put it on for them to wear. My girl Rita did great - no problems. My boy Munson thrashed around the den for about 15 minutes until he finally accepted it. Now they love them because they mean we are going for a walk! Best of luck, take it slow, and remember that no matter how slow you take it - some dogs just do not want to accept it. I ignored Munson until he was done thrashing and then we went on a walk. Good luck!

How early can you start training with the gentle leaders. I have a 13 week old puppy and when we go out for his potty breaks he's already pulling me all over the place. Could I start using one now or does it really matter when you start using them? Because if he's only 15lbs now I can't imagine taking him on a walk when he's 70lbs! He'd be taking me for a walk! lol. So I'd really like to correct this before it becomes a real problem.

14 weeks here

I put one on Gregory and he is only 14 weeks old, but at 25 lbs, he is quite strong. So far it has helped alot, but when I went home for lunch today, he was not happy with the leader.

So when they are a puppy, do you just buy a "small" now and a new one when they grow into it or will a medium "shrink" down enough to use with a puppy?

I started Mya in a medium size GL when she was about 14 weeks. She is now 13 months and it still fits her. She walks very nicely with it, but I don't like to use it when it is very hot out. Her muzzle is extremely short and it doesn't fit her quite right and she can't open her mouth all the way to breathe. I do like it because you can pull the loop off their nose and it is just a regular collar. We usually walk like that but if she starts pulling or sees something exciting, I just stop and put the loop back up.

I love the Gentle Leader! Charlie Paper used to pull so badly. I'd tried a harness, and a choke chain, which I really don't like, and neither worked. I hated taking him for walks cause he was so bad. It took him a while to accept it, and he used to ram his head into my knees, but now he's pretty good about it. I even convinced my bf to get his AmStaf one cause she pulls so badly as well. He loves it too! It was funny cause I took his dog & Charlie Paper for a walk the other day with my roommate and her dog, and they all had their GentleLeaders on with matching leash colors!

Bindi never fully got used to the GL. She would mope and pout and still try to get it off. She just was miserable. I finally got her a Easy Walk harness, which is a harness where the leash connects in the front, so if they pull they end up turning themselves around. Now, no more "Is that a muzzle" questions, and no pulling, and best of all.... Bindi loves it!
