I did not know where to post this so I thought this was the best place. My question is Does anyone here work full time say for 7 hours a day and leave your boxer home alone? I work a mid shift and my wife works during the day. When I sleep during the day he is in the crate as he is at night. I do get up every two to three hours to take him out. But was just asking if anyone else does this or similar to this and if not do you think it is a good idea to do this?

How old is your boxer? Are you giving him ample time for exercise out of the crate?

My dogs are in the crate from 8 to 4 Monday through Thursday. I come home every day at lunch for an hour. They are out of the crate most of the time Friday-Sunday. Both of mine also sleep in their crates. :)

I work 8 hours every day and my dog is in his crate for the entire work day. I am not able to come home for lunch. However, he does not sleep in his crate. Once I get home, he is out the entire time. He does just fine.

Thank you!

Thanks! I was just worried that it might be unhealthy for him. He is 7 weeks by the way. He does realy good in the crate and he loves it. He goes there if he wants to sleep or just have some alone time. Sometimes he even plays with his toys in there. He has peed in his crate one time and that was because I gave him too much room. Since then he has not done anything.

My questions is....why do you have a dog?

If you ask me...and I think this is part of your question...no, I do not think it is fair to your dog that he is going to be living in his crate for the majority of the week. When my wife and I were in a similar situation, we had cats. Now many years later, we can have a dog that can be out of the crate all day...and sleep in the crate at night.

I have a big problem when people crate their dogs during the day while they work. This basically is the same as putting the dog in a kennel full time.

I do respect your opinion. And to answer your question which is obvious. Because I love Boxers. I work 4 days on and 4 days off. Not to mention my wifes days off. So he is not crated a majority of the week. I was just asking for the times that we do work and he is in his crate.

Second, if you have a "Big problem" with people crating their dogs, then that is exactly right. It's your problem, not mine or anyone elses. I realy did not appreciate your tone. I was just asking for peoples opinions not attitudes. I realy think you are wrong on the part about crating and it being the same as keeping them in the kennel full time. But that is just my opinion. But I realy do appreciate your opinion.

Yes, my husband and I do and yes our boxer stays in his crate. My husband leaves work about an hour after I do, but from 8:30 to 5:30 he is in his crate. When he was smaller, we would take turns running (and I do be RUSHING, since we live about 1/2 hour from work) home on our lunch breaks to let him out and run him around, once he starting being able to hold it through most of the night, we lessened the number of times we would stop home during the week, now, we hardly ever do. If it was closer we definitely would...

Onto the touchy subject, which I commented on before on another thread... Cooper is 100% loved every possible moment that we can, and take him with us whenever we are able. Beyond that Cooper stays in his crate while we are at work (which happens to be the size of a small penthouse by the way). It's a shame that people think that you have to be able to have a non-crated pet to have a happy pet... And, just for the record... Cooper doesn't know how to tell time... He doesn't give us any trouble getting into his crate, and when we get back he is happy to see us, just as we are happy to see him.... He doesn't sit there tapping his big jalopenous paws if we are a little late as if to say "where have you been... it's 5:35!"

Crate is Great

Our dog Missy loves her crate but during the day she is confined to the kitchen for up to 6 hours a day - we can't fit out crate in there so she sleeps in a large fleece dog bed. As soon as we let her back into the rest of the house she goes straight for the crate.... she's there now snoring her little head off!!!!
We do lock her in - but only as part of her house training - or if I need to have a shower or else I find her on my bed!!!!! (snoring again!)

By nature, dogs typically sleep most of the day so crating or confining them to a small room is not really a bad thing, so long as they get adequate excercise and people attention each day. Confining them while you are at work all day can work in the complete scheme of things. The thing you want to avoid is confining them for more time than they are out. Ideally you want to confine them for as little as possible or for what is absolutely necessary. That may mean on Friday night after being at work all day staying home with them instead of going out to the movies. :)

IMO if the dog has the run of the house but is still left alone all day this would also be a concern. You still need to provide the dog with people attention and excercise.

Thank you! I agree with you 100%. I love my boxer very much and give him ample play time and exercise. Simba loves his crate as well.
