Hello everyone..we have a neutered male boxer that just turned a year old..He is crate trained, has not went in his kennel in over 6 or more months and when he is out he goes to the door and sits and whines to go out..well he slept in his crate at night until last night we thought we would let him sleep on the floor beside our bed.(His too big to be in our bed with us) Need a bigger bed...anyhow we took all water away at 9:00pm,watched a movie and went to bed at 11:00pm but let all the dogs out to go potty..well I got woke up at 3:00am to the sound of Moses peeing...I have never had this problem,we have four other dogs and when we crate train we gradually leave them out until we are sure they go to the door or have some way of showing us they want to go out..I was very frusted with Moses and sat up all night thinking where we went wrong but I am very confused because we usually go to bed about 9:00 and my husband gets up for work at 6:00 and he never goes in his crate...did we go wrong somewhere? Did he just pee because he had more places to go lay down and doesn't have room in his kennel to pee and lay??? Any stories or input would be greatly appreciated, I know they say its the owners fault but I am just wondering where we went wrong, Moses is my anniversary gift and we have had him since he was 7 weeks so I really wanted him to be able to sleep in our room instead of in his kennel, our other four dogs have been out of their crates for atleast a year or more now. No dogs have ever pottied in our room so its not like he was peeing over another dogs, I am just very confused and frustrated, I hate him sleeping in his crate, I know the carpet had to feel alot better.

I wouldn't be too worried about it personally. Possibly he's just a little young yet to be loose at night. What you need to figure is that although he may hold his bladder whilst in his crate, it doesn't mean he doesn't need to pee. It just means he'd rather hold on and be uncomfortable than have to sit in it. So one possibility is that he simply needs to pee during the night and, while loose in your bedroom (with the door shut?) he didn't figure he should whine at the bedroom door - as he does at the external door - to go out.

Another possibility is a UTI developing. That would affect his ability and urge to hold it. A third possibility is just that he's an adolescent boxer and not quite mature enough to be loose at night.

If I were you, I'd put him back into his crate at night for just a little longer. Keep a good eye on him for any other signs of a UTI (they're not rare) or just take him to a vet to get that checked out. And then try him again in a few weeks' time. Do you keep his crate in your bedroom? If not, that could provide a useful half-way measure that would make the transition to being loose in the room a smaller step. Good luck :)

i agree. he might be too young yet to be left out on his own, even if it is just for the night. it sounds as if he might have had to pee and didn't know where he was supposed to go and/or what to do since it was a new environment for him. perhaps trying to introduce him to your bedroom gradually might prove to be more successful next time. good luck.

I agree with the other posters. He is probably just too young to be left out at night. We let Oscar sleep in our room very gradually. At first I tried leaving the bedroom door open so he could sleep where ever in the house he wanted. That didn't work, he wanted to play all night. I then tried baby gating off the bedroom door. This seemed to settle him down because he could see where the door was but couldn't roam all over the house. Eventually we took away the gate and closed the door. He now sleeps all night.
Good luck.

Hello again and thanks for all the input...but why I am confused is because yes we HAD his kennel in our bedroom at the end of our bed but just recently moved it because we are expecting another skin baby and will have to have room for the bassinet to be..His kennel is HUGE so we moved it out of our room..and he has slept in our room before a few times,(maybe twice) and never had any problems and like I said we take water away at 9:00..didnt' go to bed until 11:30,which they were let outside before we went to bed so he shouldn't have had to pee...I will keep an eye on him for the UTI but I am really thinking he just had to go and went..I am a stay at home mom so I am here basically all day and he NEVER goes inside on the carpet,in the kitchen anywhere but outside..he goes to the front door and sits and whines to go out or the back door but he can go from say 10:00am-2:00pm without having to go...I guess maybe he is too young to leave out but my other four have slept in the house without any problems from either before or at a year old. We have another boxer, female whos four, and two english bulldogs,2-3 years old and a 6 year old maltese that sleep where ever they want and I just feel bad him sleeping in his crate all the time but then again I can't have pee all over my room either..I feel like I failed somewhere but can't figure out where,so much for thinking I was good at house-training huh...I have to figure this one out..I am going to call the trainer I went to and see what she has to say..I will keep you posted on his issue.
