Thanks for the heads up Shakira's mom. We actually have an appointment with the vet today at 4. I'm taking Nala too so the vet can check her to make sure she hasn't caught anything.

I got a crate for her yesterday and she slept in it fine last night. I would feel guilty leaving her in it during the day - "Look Nala, I got you a playmate and now I'm going to lock her up so you can't play with each other!" :P Even though as rowdy as they are after I get home, I think they must sleep all day to conserve energy and then they just go nuts when I get home!

I'm not much of an expert on JRT's but her coloring is not that of the breed standard, she must be a mix or another breed. So I don't know if I would worry too much about it. what did your vet say about her breed.
Do you have small children? because I would be concerned about having a JRT (if she is a JRT) around small kids they won't tolerate children's antics the way a boxer will.

Nope, no skinkids.

The vet said she is "a good old-fashioned terrier mix." She agreed that I should crate her during the day when I'm not home - at least for a few months until I get to know her and trust her. Heartworm negative. Whew! My vet said she is probably a little over a year old.

She also said that Nala is allergic to her plastic food bowl. Explains the hives on the nose. Guess Nala is getting nice new stainless steel bowls for Christmas!

Nala caught kennel cough

Took the new dog for her shots on Thursday. Nala was due for hers at the end of December so I went ahead and took her to get her shots too. On Saturday Nala started coughing. Just a few coughs every few hours. Continued on Sunday. Being the paranoid mommy that I am, I called the emergency vet clinic. They said it sounded like kennel cough and to take her to my regular vet asap but that it wasn't necessary to rush her to the emergency clinic. So this morning I took her to the vet. She has lost a pound since Thursday and had a slight fever. Poor thing has kennel cough. Vet said the new pup will probably develop a cough too. Vet said I caught it very early (paranoia pays off!) and antibiotics should have her feeling all better in a few days. And I tell ya, she did not at all appreciate the 10ml of cough syrup that I gave her. Wait until she figures out that she has to get it 3 times a day!

I've been crating the new girl when I'm not home and it has worked great. I still have to keep a close eye on her when I'm home though cause she gets bored and gets into trouble. Bathroom trash, pine bark mulch from the ficus tree, clean laundry, dirty laundry, shoes - she likes to pick things up and deposit them them throughout the house.

I'm calling her Lucy and Scrappy. I really want to name her Scrappy but my best friend had a wire hair dachsund named Lucy (died earlier this year) and they look so similar in the face that I just can't help calling her Lucy.

She's doing fine with the cats! She is just so darn curious about them but I think the novelty is starting to wear off and she is losing interest. She still chases them sometimes but in a playful way, not a hurtful way. On Sunday I heard the fast pitter patter of little feet and thought "oh great, which cat is Scrappy chasing now..." and then they came flying through the living room and it was my cat chasing Scrappy! I was rolling on the floor laughing!

Well, Nala is still not over her kennel cough, so we have an appointment with the vet tomorrow morning.

I've gotten some really good training advice from "i-dog" and I certainly need it! This terrier mix is proving to be quite the challenge!
