Fleas are a huge problem, i would keep your dog/cats on frontline. Its a big expensive, but a lot less expensive (and probably less harmful) then having to bomb houses and spray yards and what not.
When we first got our dog from the pound he had fleas and I researched like mad on how to kill those buggers and keep them away once I got them killed. Here is what I found:
A few preventative measures to fleas are to remove carpeting and stick w/ hard wood (fleas are less likely to jump off the dog if there is nthing for them to burrow in). Also put cedar chips under your couches/chairs and in your dog beds. Fleas hate cedar. I even have some under my cushions.
Once you get fleas, i heard the borax works if you let it sit in your carpets and then vacumn thoroughly (do not let kids or animals near the carpets at this time as if they eat it they will get seriously ill. I Have also heard that table salt works if applied thorougly. I actually keep table salt inside deuce's bed. Apparently the fleas eat the salt thinking it is food and then they die- stupid fleas

Also, when you vacumn remember to either throw away your bag, or tie your bag up in a plastic bag and freeze it as fleas will climb right back out the way they came in.
Finally, for food and care. I have heard brewers yeast works well in the prevention of fleas (not the tablets, the actual powder). I feed Deuce about 1 tablespoon of raw chopped garlic 3-4 times a week (start them slowly because raw garlic can do a number on their stomachs!!!)
For bathing, if you boil water and throw in a few lemons, then dip the dog in it (once the water cools, not into boiling water

).... it is equivalent ot a flea dip w/ out the chemicals.
Before your dogs go outside in flea season spray them w/ a combination of PURE essential oils lavendar, cedar, and tea tree oil mixed w/ water. Also dip collar in it. These will not hurt your dog, but will repel both fleas and mosquitoes (heartworm threat).
Good luck!
