Hi all,

We have a flashy brindle female pup, Macie, that is 13 weeks old. We are preparing for the future and moving to a new house. We are planning on putting in a fence and wondering what, if any, advice you all can share. Based on past experience, what would you say the optimal height is for containing a boxer.

I have heard some amazing leaping stories in the past, mainly with regards to male boxers. 6ft fence or even higher?

Thank you in advance for any advice, experiences, or comments.

Regards,
Macie'sDad

I would definitely go for a 6ft fence. Higher if you area will allow it. I know that if Adam really wanted to go over our 6ft fence, he could with the right motivation. He can body slam the top of my glass door- i know he could go over that fence. I know that if Adam did get over the fence, it would be to the neighbors behind us. One day the old lady was holding her min pin over the fence teasing my pups, Adam nearly got him. That dog teases my pups ever time he's out. At least their yard is fenced too if he ever did go over!

My mom fostered a baby boxer a few months ago. he was only 6 months old. He could sit in front of the 6 ft fence and spring right over it without a problem. He didnt care if you were watching him or not.

I guess it depends on the dog.

When we landscaped our yard last summer, we put up a 6 foot fence. I would have like to go 8 feet high, but the town limits fences to 6 feet! I say the higher the better!

I would agree... at least 6 ft. But, remember that even though they are great jumpers, they can be climbers, too. Our Dieter climbs our chain link fence if he's not supervised!

4 foot fence

Being that we live on a military base, they are all about uniformity. We canonly have 4-ft chain link fences...period. At the young age of 4 months, he was already climbing over the 4 ft fence. Now we supervise him when he is outside. He doesn't climb or jump as much now that he knows he is not supposed to, but sometimes he will get excited when our neighbor talks to him and he will try to get over. If we move off-base, we would definitely get at least 6-feet and it would be like a wood privacy fence.

Chain Link is dangerous

Hi all...I just wanted to post a word of warning....boxers being the imfamous climbers that they are, chain link is very dangerous to them. There was a German Shepard at my vets last month that had tried to go over and fell with his foot still between the wires. It broke his leg in three places, he had to have surgery & was in a cast for a long time.

I had been going to use chain link to as it is so much more affordable, but no more!

Good luck with your fence!

fence

My chain link fence is 40 inches high. Buckaroo has never tried to jump it so I am very fortunate. However, if Buckaroo wants to follow me out, he can unlatch the gate...who needs to jump, right?! So be sure to check the latch you are going to use on the gate.
hugs and slurps,
