female boxer buddies

Has anyone out there been successful raising 2 female Boxers as companions? I keep reading that they have aggression issues, and someone on this site was even kind enough to give her advice, which was to get Barkley a baby brother. I REALLY prefer female dogs. Barkley plays with 2 other adult female Boxers in our neighborhood and she gets along wonderfully. She's never shown aggression toward anyone, dog or otherwise. But, she's only 10 months, so I suppose that could change. Any advice???

I have always had two females (knock on wood) and have never had any problems. The girls who have come into our home after Nikki have always been more submissive and we have never had so much as a squabble (We got Sam when Nik was a year and a half. She passed away and got Emma when Nik was five). I think it has a lot to do with the personality of my oldest Nikki, who happens to rank highest among the memebers of the family that walk on all fours... I am thinking of cloning her .... a little to do with the fact that the girls were puppies and that I run a very tight ship here.

On the flip side, I have seen many stories on this site of fighting females and my uncle had two female German Sheps that started to fight and he had to keep them seperated for the remainder of their lives.

A last little tidbit, when I went to adopt my third, I was getting a boy without question. I wasn't about to upset the apple cart over a gender preference. I can say that having a boy is a hoot and I would not hesitate to get another. I have my next boy's name picked out already!!

You and I are in the same spot.
Although I am still working on permission for our next addition. My female is 9 month and very freindly. Never a cross look to any animal. I have always prefered females. That said I will get a male if I ever get the green light on the sexond dog.
If you read the threads males seem to be the preference.
I would just hate to temp fate. As a kid we had a female golden Retreiver and female boxer that were vicious towards each other. I never want to go through that again.
Face it they are all adorable so why not stack the deck in your favor.

Thanks everyone! After first posting that question, I saw some of the threads about fighting females and I think you're all correct...why tempt fate? So, looks like we'll think about a bouncing (how true) baby boy. What can you tell me about boy behaviors/personalities versus girls? I have actually never owned a male dog. Do they ALL do the nasty on people's legs? That's the thing that makes me most crazy.

There is a big difference between females meeting and playing with each other every so often and females living together.

Of course it can be done but females do tend to be moody and hold more grudges. Its just something that you will need to weight out and truly give lots of thought too.

Its not just male dogs that hump, females do it too. Its not a sexual thing is a dominance thing. If you do a search on it you will find lots of info reguarding the topic.

Male dogs, IMO, tend to be more laid back and easy going.

I agree wholeheartedly with Andie I have a female boxer who is four and half years old and I would never get another female boxer to live with her - it's just the way her personality is. In fact I am always wary if another female dog approaches if I have her out for a run on the beach or down at the river. Diva will not start anything, BUT neither will she back down if challenged.

My male boxer, Monty, who is now nearly 20 months old is more laid back than Diva is and he definitely knows that he is bottom of the pecking order :p Mind you that doesn't stop him pushing the boundaries occasionally! I didn't used to think this, but now I think that the males are more cuddly. Monty is definitely a Mama's boy but sometimes he is a little too protective, unlike Diva who believes that anyone who comes in the front gate if there to visit with her They both have their individual personalities - good and bad points, but of course the good far outweigh the bad.

Female Buddies

Hi,

I think that you are better off getting a male dog. I have 3 males and 1 female, the 3 males all get along, the female can be moody and suddenly lash out at the other ones. She is also aggressive in the dog house and around food. The 3 males I have get along great, one is 8-1/2 years old, the other 2 are brothers and are 1 year old. They all have their testicles, but do not fight. There has been some humping, (the 2 brothers doing it to each other) but if I see them at it, I yell "no" and they immediately stop. I actually prefer male dogs because they are not as tempermental. And I have had far less problems with them than with my female. Male dogs are not bad, yes, they do hike their leg on things, but are quite easy to train and listen quite well. I don't know if getting a male dog will make a difference, your female still may be stand-offish to him, like mine is. Good luck!!!

If you get your dogs neutered it will help with the marking of inappropiate things. Unless your males are show dogs its in their best interest to get them neutered.

Harley will be 2 in Feb. & Zoe is 14 months old. I added Zoe to the household when Harley was 8 mths old. Harley has always been very protective of his little sister & lets her get away with 'murder' When she gets on his nerves he lets her know it & she lays off. He is WAY more laid back than her, she is extremely hyper. I could never imagine having male-male or female-female in the house. So I say definately male-female.
He doesn't go around humping things either. Every once in ahwile he mounts her but it's obvious it's to show her who's boss...As Andie said - it's best to get them fixed. Both of mine are.
