Fascinated by shadows & light!!???

Hello everyone. I've got a question regarding our rescue girl, Mazzy.

Is anyone else's boxers fascinated by lights or reflections/shadows? I know it may sound strange, but Mazzy is absolutely FASCINATED by a flashlight or a reflection on the wall...anything like that. Her foster mom says she's always been like that. If the light reflects off her ID tag, she'll just stare at the ceiling or the wall and watch it...forever! If you say "What's that Mazzy? Get it!", she gets all excited and whines & wiggles her butt.

Its at the point now where we can't even SAY the word "flashlight"....she knows what it is! She'll run into the other room looking for it! We have to spell it out now! "Honey, where's the f-l-a-s-h-l-i-g-h-t."

Just curious if anyone has any theories on this, or if anyone elses boxer does it.....

Deb.. ROFL I can't believe your mentioning this. Baxter is terrified of shadows & light and will drop to the ground like he's hiding (paws over his snout) thinking the S&L can't see him. Bella on the other hand is climbing the walls to get the monsters that Bax is hiding from! hehehe. We get a kick out of this but we really have to watch it as Bella will just as soon claw her way thru the sheetrock to get those badguys

My last boxer bitch loved to chase the light from a flashlight ... it was her favourite toy. Also when a watchface caught the light and sent a reflection, she would charge at the light before it went away. Gina is also a chaser of a flashlight ... It's quite amusing when she starts to spin if you twirl it around. I understand that this can be harmful so we only do that on rare occassions.

I have a lazer pointer now and use it as a training tool for Gina at the start of a track so she puts her nose on the ground to get scent.

The best excercise tool ever is the flashlight or laserpointer. Lennox "chases the light" until she is exhausted! If I had the skill I would post a poll on this, however I am not familiar enough with the board's technology. That is hilarious that a boxer is terrified of the light. The light sure did help when she was learning the "stay" command.

Shy is amazed by mirrors.. she dont understand that it is just a reflection.. she waits for the other puppy to play with her

Absolutely!

My girl, Emmie, is nearly three and since her first gold name tag has been her own best source of recreation. I have skylights in my kitchen and Emmie will chase the reflection from her tag for hours. She stands around looking for it...
God forbid a cloudy day. And, if the reflection isn't "busy" enough she "stomps" her front feet on the floor to get it moving. Who else but a boxer-mom would go out and replace perfectly good tags just because they aren't shiney enough to produce a quality reflection???

It's fun but BEWARE: I've stopped wearing my watch and rings because, on more than one occasion, I've been driving down the road when my kids have yelled, "Emmie, NO! Mom, She's going to jump." just in time for me to brace myself for Emmie jumping-up on the back of my seat and JAMming her nose to the roof of the van so she could "get" the spot.:rolleyes:

That is sooo funny!! Yes, who but a Boxer parent would polish tags so they were more fun for the dog!!

Mine don't like flashlights or laser lites anymore. Maggie figured it out in about 10 seconds and she just stares at my hand because she knows where the light is coming from. I can't fool her that way.

But, I have a painting which I have situated on the floor, covering a non-working fireplace, which is 7 layers of hand etched glass forming a picture of Grand Central Station. Its lovely. But when I have the television on, the TV reflects in the glass and Maggie sits and turns that head and watches TV in the etching rather than the TV itself. I think she likes the movement and colors (what colors she can distinguish).

Other than that, neither seem to have any real fascination for lights.

I do note that on full moon type nites, when there are a lot of shadows around at night, the girls are a bit spooked and "on guard" and seem very jumpy at the slightest movement or change in the light or shadows.

LOL!! kaiser does the same thing!! last nite he realized that i could see him hiding behind corners with it and just looked at me thru the mirror fifteen - twenty minutes. it was the funniest thing

If Zeus gets any more out of control with the flashlight, I'm going to have to put him in a program:D When he wants to play, he will sit there and stare at the place we keep the it. He is such a silly boy when it comes to that

Owen does the same thing - he loves to chase any sort of light/reflection.

We have a laser light for him that he will climb walls, jump tall buildings to get the red dot! We have found him many times staring at the place we keep the laser and drooling.

Tegan on the other hand is "too smart" for chasing lights. She could not be bothered.

We have halogen lights in our kitchen that will cast a reflection on the walls and ceiling when we move a plate, knife, bowl, CD,... I have been knocked over numerous times when Owen is diving for the lights.

Crazy boxer.
