Can you tell me what the little envelope icon represents to the far left of a thread? Sometimes they are orange, sometimes they are blue. I have also seen an orange one with a bent arrow over it, and also a lock.

There is actually an explanation of that at the bottom of every forum Go to the bottom of this page and you will see it.

Basically, orange means the thread has many replies or views, blue does not. An open envelope means new replies since you last visited the site, or viewed that particular thread. A closed one means no new replies since then.
An arrow indicates that you have already participated to that thread. A lock on the thread means that a moderator has closed it, and no further posts can be made.
