Energy level of older boxers?

I recently have taken in an older boxer that was left at the pound to be put down. He is a very gentle soul, and has very sad eyes. I was reluctant to bring in another rescue because of another bad experience, but this fell into my lap. Before I picked him up I was shocked to learn that his age was assessed to be around 6 years old. I say this because over the phone I was initially told that he was on 1 year old!

I'm used to younger dogs, as my male is a 17 month old ball of energy that never stops. On the intial visit the dogs got along well, although the rescue didn't seem very interested in our male, which is understandable because he had just been dumped at a dirty pound by his family who apparently decided that they didn't have room to take him when they moved. But no aggression, lots of sniffing and tail wagging, none the less. I really thought it would be nice for my male to have another dog to play with, although the age difference concerned me.

Well, we just picked up the rescue on Friday afternoon. Keep in mind that he had just been neutered, and I really don't know what type of anasthesia/medications were used for the surgery. I'm sure he is still sore, and I hardly expect him to be pouncing around after only 2 days.

But...what type of energy level can a dog this old have? At this point the poor rescue, Diesel, is a sweetie, but seems very very calm, to the point where he doesn't really do anything but lie around. I don't know anything of his medical history, so that could be an issue, and I know that he recently had surgery, but he almost seems sedated. He mostly lies down all day, and when he walks, goes very slowly. Sometimes he gets up and just stands there and stares at the floor, literally for several minutes in the same spot. He now will come to us to be petted, but just lies his head in our lap and stands there wagging his tail, as if he has no energy. He pants alot. He is eating well and drinking plenty of fluids. He isn't coughing, and his eyes are clear and alert. He never cries or acts as if he is in pain. He sleeps well, but even when awake lies in his bed or stands in one spot.

I haven't had him assessed by my vet at this time. I will take him in on Tuesday. The only thing the rescue did was neuter and rabies vaccination. The only medical concern is a golf ball sized lump on his hip, which I was told is more than likely a fatty tumor and probably harmless.

Can this by psychological in nature, or physical? Is he simply too old to jump and play? My boy, Rocco, tries and tries to tempt him into a play session, but no luck so far. Diesel seems to like our male fine, but won't even lift a paw to interact. He just walks in circles to get away from my pup.

I know this sort of behavior was present before the surgery, because I remember the rescue care worker told me over the phone that he was extremely calm, to the point that he acted almost sedate. I thought she was exaggerating, or attributed it to his current situation of being dumped by his family and living in a strange place. But now I wonder if this is a permanent state for him.

Any advice for someone that has never taken in an older dog before? Is this normal?

He could be depressed over his situation & may come out of his shell in time. My older Boxer Susie is 10yrs old & has more energy than Cletus thats only 4yrs old. Give him some time & love. They are very sensitive dogs & don't do good at all in a pound, kennel setting.

Super Boxer
I have 2 boxers both 9 1/2 yrs old. Sophie is still a little spitfire, Dexter is very laid back and he always has been. Sophie has to bug him like crazy to get him to play.

I am in no way trying to tell you what to do but IMHO when you go to the vet I would ask him to do a blood workup on him just to make sure all his numbers are where they should be. My vet does a senior wellness check up.

And as it said in the other post sometimes it just takes a while to get reaclimated. He was just dumped out of his home, into a scary place, and now he's probably wondering what could happen next.

Let us know how he does. He sounds great, good for you!

It sounds like he needs a good medical workup to start with. A 6yo boxer should still have PLENTY of energy under normal, healthy circumstances. Not knowing a whole lot about him yet, it's way to soon to make a guess. How do his gums look? Lack of energy or weakness could be a result of anemia. A general health check, labs and such, physical exam and have them aspirate that lump just to be sure it IS a fatty tumor. Maybe even a thryoid panel as he is at that age where hypothyroidism might be a possiblity, especially based on what you have described so far. If everything checks out ok there, he will need some time to adjust to his new life first, and then you can observe him for more possible signs of trouble if he doesn't regain a youthful state. Anyway, this is my line of thinking on this. I sure hope that he is ok and just adjusting to the changes in his life :)

I agree with a vet check up, but don't forget this baby was dumped from the family he knew and loved, left in a shelter, had surgery and then was taken to a new home. I'm sure he's confused and depressed over the whole ordeal. Hopefully in time he'll come out of his shell when he feels better and more comfortable in his new home.

Awww.....this is so sad Poor Diesel :( First, you are an angel angelicon for rescuing Diesel, he deserves all the love in the world and he's finally found it. I think it may take a while for Diesel to adjust, I don't have experience with rescues but who knows what kind of history he's had. It's probably alot on him right now

I think before long Diesel will be boxing, wooing and maybe some boxer burns with your other fur baby. Look forward to pictures of your two!!!

Good luck at the vet's on Tuesday...praying for a good bill of health!!!
Keep us updated.

Poor baby, he is probably really depressed and confused. And, he probably doesn't feel welll either.
You will start to see his "real" personality in a few days.

I would definately take him to your vet. The sooner the better. Both of mine have had those fatty tumors before and they are fine, that was all they were.

My Sandy will be 7 in June and she runs circles around Napoleon, my 4 year old. He is happiest just laying on the couch or on the deck. She loves to be up chasing something or just being nosey.

They are all different.
Give him lots of hugs and kisses and he will surely come around.
Good Luck!

Thank you all for the replies. Honestly, I think much of it has to do with the fact that he is so deconditioned from either being chained or kennel bound through most of his life. I was told he was an outdoor dog. He is a sweetie, and I certainly don't expect him to be like my 17 month old, Rocco, who never ever slows down.

I got him on the leash today, which he seems to really respond to, and walked him around our property. He even jogged a little, and seemed much more alert and happy. Another thing is that I'm sure he has an upset stomach. He has had diarrhea for the last couple of days. Today he tried to eat some grass while outside. I imagine it could be from cold switching his food. We've been feeding Canidae All Life Stages, but I don't know what he was eating before.

I'm going to have him checked for parasites tomorrow. I have no clue if he has ever been on any preventative. He was tested for HW and that was negative, so there is a sigh of relief there. A complete workup is in order, so I will keep you guys updated.

Update

Just got back from the vet. Poor Diesel started to drain at the suture area from his neuter. Poor guy apparently was a cryptorchid, which no one bothered to tell us at the vet. That obviously is a big reason his recovery is taking a little longer. To top it off he had a fever, so he got a shot of antibiotic in the office and some more to take home. Even with all of this going on, he still is getting better with everything. He has been so sweet and calm.

Right now we have to deal with the drainage from this open spot. Good thing we no longer have carpet througout the house. Wish him luck!

Listen I am not the authority on boxers and I agree with needing a vet check but when I rescued my baby (although not from a shelter) she was like this too. Very slow moving and all around just seemed sad. I just gave her ALOT of love some reassurance that she was ok and I bought alot of goodies for her. hehehehe I say after his check then just give him some time and make sure to remember just him and you time, without the other pup. I would bet that he will amaze you the more he gets to know you and feel safe just like my Jade. Good Luck and let us know how he is doing.
