Ear Cropping Question

I just had Masey's ears cropped about 2 weeks ago and everything is going great, except for today, when I took down the taping (the first time after she got her stitches out) one of her ears looks like it has scar tissue already formed in the middle outside of her ear, pulling the ear inward and curling it down (like when it was floppy) I called my vet and ask her what to do, she said to massage it and it would be fine but no matter how much I massage that ear, it doesn't seem to do any good.

Is there any advice as to what to do? I planned on retaping tomorrow but I'm not sure if it will help -- when i stand the ear erect, it pulls really hard in the middle and the puppy sure doesn't like it much. I'm worried because I spent all that money... I just want her to have great looking ears so any help and advice would be helpful!!

I too am getting Sarge's ears cropped in 2 weeks. I have been told by several breeders and the vet, that sometimes it can take upwards of a year for them to stand correctly if they stand. I guess massage massage and tape some more, thats all I know to do. Hopefully someone with much more experience will be able to help us.

I'm not exactly sure what is going on, but, are you doing the taping and the vet not? Have you taped before? If not, can you contact a breeder of Boxers, Dobes or Great Danes? One of them would be able to check it out and probably help you. If this problem has developed just since the last taping, I wonder if you had them taped straight? I would retape and be sure the ears are straight with no curls or folds. It may be nothing to worry about, but without seeing it, I can't be certain.

I agree with Draymia about trying to find someone to help tape if you haven't before.

Here's why I think it's important: I linked up with a breeder who has bred/shown boxers for 20 years, and she helped me tape/post Hoss, and one of his ears STILL does not stand correctly (flops over 1/3 of the way from the top). We worked on them, retaping weekly, till he was 16 months old before giving up on that ear! In his case, he has really heavy ear leather and a long crop, and that combination didn't equal perfectly standing ears.

Her ears are doing great. I chose not to retape her ears at all. We just massaged them 4 times a day and gave her calcium supplements and it is doing its job. Her ears are standing erect now with one that still flops over her head (the side she doesn't sleep on at night) but we've kept on massaging them and they are doing great for now.

Please have the puppy seen very soon by somebody who has experience taping ears. You can't let things slide in the early stages and then manipulate the ears back to standing. Having decided to do the ear crop you owe it to yourself and the dog to end up with the best result possible, and that could be jeopardized if you let the ear crimp up.

Today Sarges stitches came out of his ears. They look so nice, can't wait for them to stand fully erect. The vet and I did disagree on the way to tape them. I allowed him to tape them the way he wanted to for the first time, and I will tape them the way we use to tape our dobermans ears when we were young and my mom raised them. Wish me luck, as I am hoping to have these ears fully erect on their own by time my husband gets to return from a deployment for the army, which in in July.

Don't know if this is the right place for this, but seems to be the closest to it. Thanks for the link on how to tape. My wife really wants to get our pup's ears cropped, where do we go to get this done? Do I just go to the nearest vet? I'm scared to do that because I don't know if they have experience, I could ask, but there's no guarantee, and once you've done it, there's no going back. I'm thinking the best bet is to find the closest shower/breeder to get a reference, what do you think? Closest boxer club is an hour and a half away, so long drive to any hopeful vets near there. Any advice would help. Thanks.
