I was living in the stone ages as well and if truth be told for the first few months after getting my Droid (Charge) I wish I still had my old phone.
I am now glad that I have it. I don't do a lot of apps, still not all that savvy with the phone yet but the things I do have (or downloaded) have been very beneficial to me.
I have close friends who know their phone stuff and have had iphones for a long time but since they all LOVE to play with my Droid they keep saying their next phones will be a Droid.
I used to carry a flash light with me for work but I was able to get that out of my pocket since my phone is now my flashlight (app). I love that I can put my grocery list on my phone instead of carrying around an actual paper list. I got a dictionary app which is wonderful too. It's come in handy a few times when I wanted to look up an address or phone number too. It takes much better pictures than my old phone but I still don't have a USB cable to transfer them to my computer. I tried to download an app that was supposed to do it automatically for me but I wasn't successful. :D
I don't visit websites on my phone like I do my home computer (BW, FB, etc...). Even though my screen is very large the text is still quite small and when I make it bigger it takes longer than I want to spend to scroll to read much. If I didn't have my computer for some reason or my internet went down I could get to places via my phone so for me it is just a backup I could use if need be.
I still haven't mastered the e-mail thing on my phone. I can get e-mails but more often than not if I read them and then want to get back to them later they have disappeared (not from my gmail account for some reason but my main work addy). That bites and I am sure there is a way to correct that but I can't figure it out. Luckily I still get those on my home computer.
If you have wireless at home make sure to set your phone up to automatically connect to it (among other places you frequent). None of your data allowance is going to be used if you are connected to wifi.
I keep my phone in 3g mode as it uses less of the battery (or so I was told). You can easily change it anytime you want and I have done that in an attempt to see if it was faster (didn't really notice).
I don't text either and have that blocked from my phone plus I am cheap and didn't want to pay extra for that!
My DH and I have the same phone so we had to make them sound different. I make sure he turns his phone on before leaving the house (or I do) whoever leaves first since he has taken my phone by mistake before when he didn't turn it on (different pictures on the screen identify them).
When a Droid turns on it makes a terribly annoying "DROID" sound (actually says Droid and sounds like glass shattering). Had 4 different people at the Verizon store try to help me eliminate that but were unsuccessful. I finally figured it out on my own in the settings. It may not bother you but I hated it with a passion!
We also took the plunge when the prices were a "deal" of buy one get one ($199.00) and 4gb of data verses the standard 2gb.
It will take some getting used to and they are far from perfect.
Yesterday it was in the 70's here but my "smart" phone told me it was 87 degrees. I think it was having a hot flash!
Stupid smart phone.
I think you will be glad you got one though.
! I was content with my little flip phone but my kids all grown mind you, were a little embarrassed, so my son welcomed me to the 21st century with an iphone. I love it, still learning all about it. I'm sure whatever you choose to get you will love it. Shoot I can get on fb, boxer world, and check my email right on that little gadget! Good luck
