Hi
My Boxer is the most loving, sweet, little boy. Since we brought him home, he has slept with us in our bed. I know this is wrong, but he HAS to be touching us when he sleeps. He needs contact. Everything I know about Boxers tells me they love to be touching when they sleep. I don't have the heart to put him in his crate at night, he loves sleeping with us sooo much. How much is this hurting him, will he have bad behaviour as a result?

We bought a king bed so we could all fit! I guess as long as you don't care that he's sleeping with you, it's not an issue. If you aren't getting a good night's sleep because of it you probably should teach him to at least sleep in a dog bed next to your bed. All I can tell you is once they get used to sleeping on the bed..............good luck!

Many people let their dogs sleep with them in bed (including myself!). Nothing wrong with that. You could teach him to only come up when he's invited if you are worried about him possibly getting to demanding.

There is really nothing wrong with this, as long as you understand that it is a permanent arrangement. :) What would make it wrong would be if you allowed him to sleep with you for a few weeks or months upon first coming home, but planned to later have him move to the floor or crate. A lot of people mistakenly do this with puppies -- they come to their new home and get used to being up in the bed right next to the humans, but come 60 lbs they are banished to the floor and really don't understand why. So as long as he's there for good, it's OK. :)

You could try this - this worked for us:

We bought Rocky a nice big comfy bed and its on the floor next to my side of the bed. He's been sleeping there since he was 4 months old. He wakes up to be let out for potty around 6 usually or sometimes 5am and at that point we have 1-2 hours of sleep left. After his potty break we say "ok" and pat the bed and he comes up and sleeps with us just for the last hour or two. Sometimes he sleeps on the floor the whole time if he doesnt' wake up- or if we don't want him to jump in bed with us he'll gladly lay down. But he knows he can't come up unless invited and usually not until its light outside he knows :)

Good luck.

We allow Nala on the bed. She doesn't sleep with us at night because our bed isn't big enough for all of us but as soon as one of us gets up she takes that persons place  And yes she has to be touching if not on top of one of us :D

There is nothing wrong with letting your pup sleep with you. It will not cause any poor behavior in other areas. that only comes from not being consistant with training in those areas. but as someone else posted you can make it a rule that no pup on bed without being invited up first. Nala's rule for the bed is she is allowed up whenever she wants when no one else is in the bed. if someone is in the bed she must be invited first. she of course is always invited but she knows the rules.

have fun with your new pup.

Both James and Frankie sleep with us! Sometimes they have to sleep in their own (super comfy and expensive) beds on the floor. But come 3-4 in the morning they are both back where they belong!!

I woke up this morning to.....James' face facing me- his head on the other pillow and body under the covers- if anyone saw me!!

T.b.h id hate to sleep without them now im so used to it and really like it!

Diva has slept on the bed since she came home at 11 weeks of age - she is now nearly 11 and half years of age! Monty was never allowed to sleep on the bed, but that was pretty much only because he was like a big block of concrete that couldn't be moved! unlike Diva who was a runt and much more pliable to move if required. However, on weekends Monty would get let outside for pees first thing and then he would race back inside and get on the bed - it was a huge treat for him. Monty was happy sleeping through the night in his crate that was in the bedroom.

If you're okay with it and as long as he doesn't get territorial, then there's nothing wrong with him sleeping in the bed. :)

If you do want him sleeping in bed with you, then I think it's beneficial to also get him comfortable sleeping on a dog bed on the floor. You never know when there will be a night where you just don't want a dog in the bed, or maybe can't have a dog in the bed... who knows.

When I stopped crating Juno at night (I can't remember how old she was), she slept in bed with me. After a few months I got sick of sharing my small twin bed with her lol. So I had to retrain her to sleep off the bed.... she wasn't happy about it and she'd whine a lot, but now she willingly goes in her crate at night. Although I do occasionally wake up in the middle of the night with a boxer on top of me.... don't know how that happens. :) When I have my weekend kennel shifts at the vet clinic I work at, my morning shift is only from like 7-8am, so when I get home and go back to bed, I let her come up with me. But she knows not to come up until invited.

Both of our doggies sleep on the bed with me, usually on my side of the king sized bed (along with the 2 kitties). I don't see that there is anything wrong with allowing your baby on the bed.
