I too am allergic to dogs and cats (I have 2 of each too). I use Singulair, zyrtec and flonase ,albiet sporadically, to get a handle on them. I just keep my animals clean--dogs get a bath every 3-4 weeks and the cats go to the groomer every 2-3 months. But the weird thing is that I'm more allergic to the males--especially my boxer---I get the itchy bumpy hives from him--but not my female (I used to have the same thing happen when my childhood boxer (also a male was wound up)). But a couple of weeks ago--I started the dogs on some garlic and joint health supplements and I haven't had a problem recently.
Doesn't the Dyson rule--I was petrified at the amount of hair it picked up the first time I used it.

I'm mildly allergic to Lola, I'm not sure if it is her fur or her saliva. But when I play with her alot (like wrestling) or if she gives me lots of kisses, I break out in hives on my face, neck and arms. They itch like crazy, but if I don't scratch they go away quickly. I don't break out if I'm only petting her. I'm careful not to let her lick me if I'm on my way out somewhere, but otherwise I just deal with it. Lola has learned to give me kisses with her wet nose. We call them "mommy kisses".

Singular, Claritin D & flonase...all work pretty good at our house. No dog allergies thank goodness but I am severely allergic to cats. My MIL of course has three of them which is hard when we visit. I have to dose up on meds & still can only stay about an hour and I start getting sick.
