Does yours cry too?

Does your boxer whine? Kirby cries all the time, or atleast it seems like it somedays!! If we leave food on the counter he will not leave that room until it is put away, and he will whine unitl it is gone. Sometimes walking around looking for something he will whine, and I don't know why!! Sometimes he will do it just for attention, and I suck him up pretty good!! My fiancee says I spoil him to no end, and that he is a mama's boy. which he is, I wont deny it!! I love that he is a HUGE suck, and I would not want it any other way!! But he does cry when he does not get his own way..or for any other reson i don't know!! Anyone else's boxer do this?

Tyler is a whiner. Sometimes, i know why he is whining - he wants attention or food. Other times he will just whine for what seems like no reason. I just ignore him when he does it and he usually stops after a few seconds.

Spike does this too. I always thought that it was for attention, most of the time he does it when he wants to go outside and play or wants us to play with him. Spike is spoiled rotten too - he was supposed to be for my son who is 4yrs. old, but he has become a mama's boy and I love it!

There are so many post about not giving into your Boxer, NILIF and how to make sure your puppy is a happy puppy. Why on earth would you spoil your dog so much that all he does now is whine? Dont get me wrong, I am not telling you how to raise your boxer but with all of these lessons that we read on the board and how there behavior relates (the dogs) to a young child; which for the 90 % of the time is accurate, why on earth would you ever want to promote a situation for a whiney dog? Have you ever seen a spoiled child who just whines to whine? No matter what you give or what they have they just whine! Maybe you can cut back on giving him attention or stop babying him so much. There is nothing wrong with a little more attention here and there.

My fiancée started to do the same thing, but I put an end to that for both of there sakes as well as mine. After a long day I am looking forward to coming home and spending time with my new family, not a whiney hound.

I guess I should of explained in my previouse post that this is not something that bothers me! I love that he is a suck, and I will continue to spoil him until the end!! I do beleive in the NILF method, luckily I have not had to use to, Kirby is the most obiedient, well trained dog I have ever met! I just wanted to see if this was a boxer trait!!! If he wants to whine, and suck up the attention, then bring it on, cause I have lots to give!!! I would NOT want it any other way!!

Mine whines and cries when he does not get what he wants and gets even more annoyed when I tease him by doing the same noise he does. If I am sure that he does not need anything I just leave him whine for a while and it usually stops. I have learnt that puppy does not know how and when to stop, he would go on forever. As much as I spoil him but I want him to be a good family member. Sometimes it is very difficult not to have him have his way since he is soooo cute.

Mine too

My Rebbie whines too...He knows I'll come running and he likes this...he also does not bark he does what i call a "wooo wooo". I love it. I also make the sound and he turns his head and it makes him crazy..

Diamond and Winky whine constantly, but my middle girl Laila doesn't ever whine. In fact, she hardly ever even barks or growls (when playing). Who knows why...? LOL

Yes, I have a doggie gate which stops mine from coming upstairs, if I go up Ruby in particular will whine and cry. All 3 whine when I'm preparing their food.

The answer is quite simple - the dog whines because it brings a result. He gets something: be it attention, food, the door opened, a game, whatever.

Like any other behaviour, you shape it by your responses. If you utterly ignore whining, or get up and leave when he does it - especially from the outset - the dog won't whine when he wants something, because it doesn't work. If it does work, then he will extend the behaviour to the next thing he wants. Simple enough. And if you're OK with him expressing his wishes that way, fine.

If you're not OK with it, don't respond to it. And better still, teach an alternative behaviour that you prefer (eg. sitting) and that you will respond to, for him to do instead. Just make sure you do respond to it or he'll try different techniques (such as whining) till he finds something more effective.
