I take Maggie's collar off the minute we get inside. She sits nicely as soon as we get in the door and waits for me to take it off. Since we live in an apartment building (of sorts), it isn't likely she'd get much further than down a couple of flights of stairs. She can't get outside by herself.

I just don't want her to have "collar neck" as I call it, where a collar impression is in her fur around her neck. That's where her best markings are and I don't want it to be all matted down and ugly.

But of course, she's always collared when we go out for any reason, and always on leash unless we're in the dog park. But even then without leash, she still has on her collar and tags.

Megan wears her collar outside definitely and occassionaly inside. If we are just coming in sometimes she doesn't ask for her collar to be taken off and I leave it on her. If I noticed that she starts scratching at it than I take it off.

On the whole though I would have to say she wears it outside more than inside.

Markus never wears his collar inside. I always take it off as soon as we come inside.

collars

My boxer girl Ruby only wears her collar for walks, obedience, and agility. My sis who has 2 boxers had a bad experience when her two dogs were playing. They got tangled and she came real close to loosing the pup do to strangulation. S he was able to get the collar cut just in time. So I am a little paranoid to leave the collar on.So my girl is in the buff at home.

My boy Baxter is "nekkid" when he's in the house...I don't use a collar with him yet, but have him in a harness. If he gets out...which he's never tried, he's chipped. Since he is crate trained, it is likely that I will take his collar off whenever he's in the house, like I did with his sister Dixie. But have it on anytime we're outside.

Vera wears her collar all of the time, except bath time. After she gets out of the bath though, if we don't put it back on right away she starts acting really weird. It's like she is modest, and feels like she's naked without it.

Both of my dogs wear their collars in the house. The reason is: When I take off Buddy's collar he appears to be hurt by it. It is an ego thing with him I guess, and I hate to injur his pride. I have continued the practice with Kailee, basically out of habit. I must say though, that all of their tags, with the exception of their guardian angel, are on their slip collars. I only use the slip collars for walks, and they are removed when we get home. The guardian angel is on them at all times, and never removed except for baths.

Both mind wear their collars at all times. I don't 100% trust Bailey in the house, so her jingling tags let me know where she is. :p

I understand the possibility of hazards, but to me, those possibilities are more remote than them running out of our yard. We do not have a fenced yard, so they do ocassionally feel the need to "explore."

I used to take Bailey's collar off when she went in the crate, but I don't now. Her crate is the plastic airline-type crate. The chance of her getting caught on it, in my opinion, are slim to none. And, she's only in the crate at night--we're home.

Having said that, I don't believe any dog should EVER wear a slip or choke collar unless on a leash. :)

There was a story last summer about someone in our town whose dog was laying on their deck and the slip collar fell between the cracks of the wood and got caught on a nail. The owner was trying to restrain the dog and hold him down so he wouldn't choke himself. She yelled and got the attention of a neighbor who came over and had to cut the chain collar off the dog.
I believe those types of things rarely happen with a flat collar.

We leave the cir collars on usually. If we take them off, it usually means they re gong to have a bath...which they quite like so they go a bit mad. (weird doggies, boxers aren't they?)

We have lately been letting them go 'naked' for a bit in the evening, as we are doing agility without collars, so it's really to get them used to not having them on.

Kota wears a collar full time at her now advanced age of 7 weeks. Unless a medical condition exists it'll will stay that way.

While I fully understand the concerns that a collar can get caught on something and cause harm to the dog I see that as not wearing your seat belt because it can choke you to death when you get into an accident.

I don't know the statistics but I'd care to wager more dogs are lost because they don't have a collar then because they're wearing one.
