tail or not to tail, that is the question.

My Travolta has a tail. It is weird when you first see them because it is instilled that Boxer's have no tails. But it is a way of life here in Australia.

A fact for all.
It is illegal in Australia to dock tails of any breed unless it is a medical requirement.
If you or a Vet is caught doing the procedure you will be fined $5000.00 on the spot.

Trent.

Our Rocky is docked with his dew claws removed but natural ears. I would never get a boxer with cropped ears. Or any other dog for that matter. I have never seen one with a natural tail either. I was curious though if anyone knows why they remove the dew claws. I know why the tails and ears get done. It is from the old days when they were breed as working dogs and just continued in the show ring. Glad to see they are being accepted with natural ears. I do agree with the tail being a weapon. The speed that little nub travels at I am sure a full tail would hurt.

I've heard the reason they remove the dew claws is so they don't get caught on something & rip off. Greta's dew claws are removed (with some rather big scars left behind), her tail is docked, and she has natural ears. I can imagine her with her tail - she could take care of the coffee table with one swipe!

If I decided to get a Boxer for showing in the U.S., then I'd need to have her tail docked and ears cropped. I don't have so much of an issue with tail docking, because it's done when they are a few days old, and the nerves around the tail aren't fully formed. The ear cropping is something I would only do for showing - and I don't see that happening. I totally appreciate breeders who 'better the breed' but I will always get my dogs from rescue (I'm getting into a WHOLE other topic here!).

I've noticed that Greta uses her nub as a tripod when she's sitting down.  Anyone else notice this??

Then you'll be pleased to know that the US standard was updated earlier this year and now includes a description of the natural ear. There is thus no excuse for natural ears to be penalised in the US show ring, nor any reason why someone who prefers natural ears should be pressurised into cropping them - just for the show ring ;)

You can view the updated US standard at www.boxerworld.com/standards

AWESOME!!!! I did not know that it was recently updated. I'm definitely 'for' natural ears. Thanks!!

I voted, "No, glad it's docked"
But, thinking about it, it really doesn't matter. I have never thought any other breed was funny, because it had a tail! Why in the world would I think a Boxer would look funny with a tail!
Guess you need a new category in your poll! :)

Bayley has a docked tail but natural ears - our GSP has a docked tail too, I think Bayley looks nice w/ a docked tail but I think Baxter (our GSP) would look better with a tail.

Full pedigree tail and all

My brand new baby Sasha is 7 weeks old and she has a lovely fawn tail with a white tip. It wags non-stop. We were told when we got her that they have made it illegal to dock from April 1st and didn't think anything of it. The lady said it was her first litter with long tails. SHe is lovely and chases her tail like most breeds do. Although she does resemble a staffy while she is young!!

If anyone wants a picture ill try and get some really good tail shots! ;)
