My 3 month old female Boxer seems to drink an awful lot of water. She is not overly active because we can't get outside to play due to a foot plus of snow on the ground! I also have a 12 yo Bichon so maybe it just seems like alot because the Bichon doesn't drink so much?? If I put down a bowl of water, she will drink in all whereas by Bichon only drank what she needed and always left some in the bowl? Should I be concerned? I thought she may have a UTI?

GDOGS drinks quite a bit of water, but drinks a whole lot more in the warmer months,so it would be hard for me to compare him to any other boxer, plus not having to much knowledge with a dog with a UTI as he has never had one.hope you get the answer you need soon.

My dog would be a bad comparison. I have to watch out for dehydration with him. He forgets to drink. And he doesn't like chlorinated water that comes from most municipal water systems. Count yourself lucky at least in that regard!

:)

Have you ever tried to let her drink her fill? Perhaps she's simply hording the water when she can, because it's not always available. She's still very young and she may think that water isn't always available - it's hard to tell from your post if you refill after she finishes the bowl.

Boxers also "seem" to drink more because they loose half of it flinging it around the room or as it drips from their flews when they come to wipe their lips on your pants leg or couch to dry off. LOL
:)

So I'm not sure what to tell you.

I had one boxer who would drink and drink and drink until he'd had enough. Far more than the two girls. Then he was done. There was never anything wrong with him.

But:
A dog who drinks too much can have several different medical issues. The only way you will know is by having your vet do some tests.

Good luck!

I was trying to find where I read it, but couldn't find it on here. But I read dogs who eat dry kibble do tend to drink more, as it can be dehydrating.

Arabella is a drinker :) we say she goes on her drinking marathons. She really doesn't go to her bowl frequently through the day, but when she does, I have no idea how she has room for that much water lol. I usually am up at least once through the night and she will follow me , and she always goes to that bowl and does her biggest drinking "marathon" then...it's insane how much water she drinks. Then she's out to potty and back to bed.

I agree with kisaq, I would definitely be leaving water out at all times.

I read somewhere that they will drink more if you feed dry food. I always heard they should drink 1 ounce of water per pound of weight.
