Does anyone rent?? How did you find a place?!

Same situation...

I am currently in the same situation trying to find a house to rent that allows my babies. I have a husband and wife landlord now, and only the husband knows I have the boxers and says that it'll be less of a headache if his wife doesn't know so every time they come over I have to hide them or take them for a car ride. I just wish more people were animal lovers like all of us.

Some places have boxers on their "aggressive breed" list and some places don't. Most times you will have to call and find out. To look for our current townhouse I used:

www.theapartmentguide.com

When using these you are able to put down you want pet friendly places. Then just go through the results and see which take large dogs and so on. Those sites really help a lot! Good luck!

oh the days!

I remember those days! (actually they weren't that long ago!)
when my boyfriend and I were looking for an apt. we were having a helluva time!
we had to kennel kneesaa while we were looking b/c we were staying at my bf's parents. so on top of trying to come up with first, last & security, we were paying $12/day to board kneesaa!
we ended up finding an apt. complex that allowed dogs, we also lucked out that three other families had boxers.
we told him we'd take the apt. that day!
we actually only stayed there for 3 months when a friend of my bf's family offered us a house to rent where we only had to pay the taxes on the property. we're hoping to stay here until we save up enough to buy a place.
I'd say be very truthful up front up front about the dog. call all the places in the paper that don't say "no pets". a lot of times if you tell them about the situation and are honest and then offer to let them meet your pup they'll come around to how much this boxer really means to you!

It is unfortunate that there are so many irresonsible pet owners out there that have ruined renting for the rest. I feel your frustrastion since I have also gone through a lot to find dog friendly places. My friend just had a couple move out of their rental property with two boxers and two cats. The house was nasty. They are not going to rent to people with pets anymore because of this. I tried to plead with them since I told them to look at my place but I guess since it has cost them a fortune to repair damages and replace rugs that were just put in two years ago when these tenants moved in, they just don't want to hear it. Good luck - I hope the advice given here will help you find a place.

It wasn't too bad for me, but definitely not easy. I found a great townhouse complex that did allow pets - then after I decided I wanted it, they asked what breed. Turns out boxers were on their "disallow" list because of size and aggression. However, the woman who was approving me really liked me and also has always loved Boxers, so we arranged for Diesel to come down and have an interview with her and her boss. He was a sweet, friendly gentleman, and won them over, so he got an exception! I worked with him before our appointment, and told him he had to be on his best behaviour, because I really wanted the apartment. He walked in the office, sat down, and offered up his paw - it was precious!! And now Dana is happy, because we've set the precedent that boxers are now allowed, so she's going to get one!

I have found www.craigslist.org to be a pretty good website too. You can select your area, rentals, and then check the DOGS checkbox and it will only return rentals that accept dogs. Of course, some of them only allow little dogs, but it does narrow it down some for you.

I have lived in 3 apartments over the last 4 years. The first one allowed no pets. The second allowed pets under 20lbs. but there were labs and other large dogs in the complex. The place I live now has no weight restriction, which is why I chose it. Most apartment complexes have weight limits under 25lbs. I would use an apartment rental guide (apartmentguide.com is a good one). Most of the sites tell you what the weight restrictions are. That way, you won't have to waste your time with the ones that won't welcome your sweetie!

I rent here in Las Vegas...and let me tell you...it's difficult to find a place that will allow a dog over 25lbs. It's crazy. I have a friend that's a Realtor (this is before I started working for a Real Estate co.) and I had him look up a bunch of homes fitting within a certain criteria...and allowing pets was numbro uno!
Sirus was the hit of the Property Management co. that I'm renting through. When you move into one of their properties and you have a pet, you have to submit a picture of the pet. Everytime I went in to sign something...I'd hear..."Where's your adorable dog?! Bring him with you next time!"
It helps to have a gorgeous dog doesn't it?!

We had a hard time, too. For a long time it seemed like we were never going to find a place! Like other people have mentioned, it seemed like possible damage to the house/yard was the main thing making the landlords not allow dogs. So, we offered to pay an extra damage deposit, and emphasized the fact that Gracie is crate-trained, so if we couldn't supervise her she would be safe in the crate instead of wrecking the place. Our landlady absolutely loves Gracie now that she is past worrying that her house is going to be damaged!
