Does anyone rent?? How did you find a place?!

I've had a devil of a time trying to find a place to live and no one will rent to me because of Winston. :( :( If anyone can offer any advice to finding a place for me and Winston it would be much appreciated..

I would bring Tomi with me to see the place. I would make them meet him in person before they made a decision. Every single one of my rentals has met Tomi and they fell in love with him. How could they not, he's a boxer

So are you saying that I shouldn't tell them I have a boxer ahead of time? Instead just bring him with me to view a place to live?

I rent, and in some areas it is easier to find a place that rents to dog owners (NYC, for example). But a lot of times, it is difficult. You should definitely make sure they allow dogs--you don't want to surprise them. Then offer to bring him so they can meet him and see how well behaved is (provided he is!). You could also offer references for him if you have some available, and also offer to bring his vet records and obedience records as proof you are a good dog owner (up-to-date on shots, trained dog).

My brother and his wife ran into this there rental was going up for sale they have 2 boys , very nice well behaved but people still wouldnt rent to him ,well he found one place with a 2,000 damage deposit, so they moved there house buying plans up 1 year and solved it that way. Its not just boxers its renters with pets in general who ruin it for the good people , there are alot of pet owners that let them destroy rental places. Good luck to you and I agree I would just have him in the car and say oh my I forgot to ask do you allow pets? and introduce him...

When I rented, I had a Golden Retriever who was an awesome dog, but because of his size would often cause skepticism with prospective landlords. So what I would do is gather references from my past landlords (who of course loved my dog) attesting to how good he was, etc. Then when I applied to rent, I mentioned that I had a dog and he came with his own references You could bring your Boxer with you and hand them his references and then they'll fall in love too!

We also had a challenging time finding an apt....the higher end places will not accept pets over 25 pounds but are tiny to begin with. We were lucky enough to find a three story townhouse...much older community that accepted our monsters. Don't get me wrong...we were told we had to pay 2 $500 deposits NON_REFUNDABLE!! (yes that's right $1000!) but we were lucky enough the leasing agent loved us and our dogs....(yes we brought them too...just enough for her to see in the truck) and she just charged us one fee of $500. There IS a website just for people who have animals searching for apts....no fee charged! I think there is a link on here somewhere!

Just another thought...I don't know what your area is like or budget is, but when some friends of ours were looking to rent, they found that most apartments would not allow any pets, but people renting out houses putside city limits were more open to accepting pets.

I rent and I live in Columbus. I don't know are you looking for an apartment? I used a website, www.forrent.com. You can look for breed restrictions and things to that nature. There was a few places that didn't have a problem with cosmo and I moving in, but it is hard to find.
