Hi all,

I don't know if this is the right forum for this but here goes...my boxer girl, Riley, goes nuts when I come home from work (or being out, etc). She is 14 months and still crated when I am out of the apartment. She gets so worked up that she winds up peeing in the crate and on the floor in her way out of the crate. Even if I am only gone a few hours (today 6 hours at work), she still winds up peeing because she gets so excited. Other than this problem, she is completely housebroken. I would like to wean her out of the crate, but I don't want to do so until I can trust her not to pee when I come home. I am going to start limiting her water in the morning.

Any other advice? Anyone else have this problem? Could she have an incontinence problem?

Thanks!!!
Erica

From everything I've heard, females seem to do that. Indy tinkles when one of her canine friends comes around, because she's so excited. As long as she doesn't pee a lot more than usual throughout the day and seems okay otherwise, I wouldn't be concerned about it. I cut Indy's water down to half a bowl after 10 at night-just enough to get a little drink, not too much to wake her up at 3 in the AM to go out. She adjusted fine to the decrease and now even seems able to ration it out herself(I do make exceptions if were out late playing). Good luck!

My Boy is the same way...hes 16 mos. he pees on my friends when they come over..or anyone else he rarely sees. ive heard that it is a nervous condition, but dont be alarmed she should grow out of it. I know how annoying that is.....good luck

Tiger does it too (15 weeks). We just have people that come over ignore him for a few min. Then pet him. That seems to be working pretty well.

Yup our girl Porscha does the same thing too! She is complety house broken, but If we leave her alone for more than 6 hours or so, she gets real excited when she sees us and she ends up peeing. Since we let Porscha roam while we are at work and when we get home she usually greets us at the door and we let her get excited outside so she can pee.. =P Porscha is 14 months old -

Rocky used to pee all the time when he was excited. Fortunately he grew out of it about 6 months ago or maybe less.

There is hope!

Grunt is a little over two years old, and although it has been tapering off, he still pees when he sees someone he really likes, or someone he doesn't know that well. I've been trying to get my husband to not react to the peeing; I've read that here and our vet said that it worked with her dog. Kind of hard not to be apologizing profusely when your dog pees on someone, my hubby says. This is true!

Why don't you try practising leaving and returning? Practise when you're not really leaving by crating her, then 'leaving' for five minutes, coming back and then leaving again (don't let her out when you 'return'). And also practise when you really do return - by not letting her out immediately, but by 'leaving' again - just for a minute or two, then come back and 'leave' again. The point here is to desensitise her a bit to your return.

And when you do go to let her out, back off again if she starts to get too excited as you approach the crate and wait for her to calm down before trying again.

Most people are able to solve this sort of problem by ignoring their dog for a few minutes when they first arrive home, so that the event of their arrival isn't quite so exciting. Since your girl appears to be peeing before she even gets attention from you, you'll need to be a bit more extreme and try the desensitising method described above. After a while, your arrival shouldn't be quite so exciting since it doesn't mean she's getting out her crate right away, it's just as likely to mean you're leaving again. Either way, she doesn't get out the crate until she's calm.

Once you reach the stage where you can arrive safely (ie. without the excited peeing) then you should continue to use the 'ignore for a few minutes' technique when you first get home, so that you don't get a regression.

Scout has "excitement tee tee" too. She is 8 months old and is crated while we are at work or gone for more than 10-15 minutes. She doesn't have this problem when we come home but it is usually a few minutes after we come home before we let her out of her crate. Her crate is in our bedroom so she can't see us but she can hear us when we come home. Her problem is when other people greet her. It doesn't seem to matter if it is here or at the vets office or on the street. Since the vet has made mention of it and acted like it was not big deal I just assumed that it was a boxer breed thing and/or something she would out grow. Glad to know it is not just us.

Mya has the same problem too. She is now 9 months old and I have noticed it decreasing considerably. She never did it when my husband or I came home, just new people coming to the house. Even if they ignore her she would still pee. I would constantly have to hold a towel under her so she wasn't peeing all over the floor! Right now it is only her teacher at obedience school that makes her pee from sheer excitement!
