I think you would all be surprised how you're "babies" would act in a time of need. Oz for example barks when someone's at the door - once or twice but then stops. Normally when we let someone in she instantly loves them does the bean dance and everything. Well one time when I was gone, my wife answered the door, Oz went through her normal routine, but this guy was telling my wife he needed to use our phone because his car broke down....blah blah lies and more lies- well anyway Oz could sense my wife's fear and started going nuts - barking lunging growling at the door with all her hackles raised. It wasn't even like our dog. So I think somehow they know when they need to act.

Yes, I KNOW my Samson would attack someone, if they were trying to harm a family member. One day when I was out in the fenced backyard playing some ball with Samson, my dad was on the outside of the fence, trying to get the mower started, you could hear him, but you couldn't see him because he was behind a really big bush in the yard... well Samson went charging down there... hair raised and growling.... as soon as he saw it was just my dad he calmed right down. I said to my dad "it's a good thing you weren't some stranger over there!" :p He always goes crazy barking when someone comes to the door... the UPS man now slowly and very quietly sneaks the package over to the door... or if the dogs have already started barking... he'll just throw the box!
I can never understand why he is SO afraid... our dogs have never even been in the yard when he comes. He doesn't have a clue of what they look like... just that sound sends him running!

LOL! Austins mom that gate sign is awesome were did you get it i want one :D My father in law grew up with boxers and he had a boxer named Shan that was HIS dog, and it would protect him from everything, even his dad! He's told me a few stories when he would get in trouble and his dad would try to spank him but Shan would get in between him and his dad and wouldnt let him spank him! Hmmm that would have been nice growing up!

We have a 13.5 month old flashy fawn male named Tank. He's the friendliest thing you'll ever meet, but im sure when he's old he'll get the job done. He already sits on the porch in the afternoon when we are home and just watches everyone. And I cant really explain this but i really think he's a good judge of character. Like the neighborhood we live in isnt the best, and some people that walk by you can just tell they are up to no good. Tank hardly ever barks, just watches people and wags his tail, but every once in a while i swear he can tell when someone sketchy walks by, he'll start growling and barking. I just look at him like he's nuts because he was just waggingn his tail at the last guy that walked by. I dont know if that makes any sense or if anyone else knows what im talking about. When we first brought tank home he was 7 weeks, and we put a beware of dog sign on the fence and some guy walked by and saw tank and laughed at me and said "sooo you really think sign is neccesary pal?" I told him to come back in a year and ask me that ;)

It's so funny that this topic came up cause I was thinking about this exact thing last night. I was wondering, when did your babie's protective instinct kick in? Lexi will be 6 months old next week and she goes ape sh@% trying to get to everyone she sees to give them wiggles and slobbers.

Don't know if Sammi, or my Rottie, Max, would attack, but anybody who was still brave (or stupid???) enough to try to get in when these two start barking would have to be out of their minds! Sammi goes berserk when she hears or sees somebody (or a shadow) pass by, and when Max growls/barks, it sounds like there's a wild bear in the house! They're both actually sweethearts, but they don't sound it...

Max is the most serene animal you've ever seen, but he does "protect the momma", even from the daddy, when we're playing. It's actually very funny, because if I slap my own leg and yell "Ow!", Max starts barking at my husband! LOL:D

LOL! :p It is really funny! :D Just yesterday he dropped off a box on my front porch, nobody heard him... not even the dogs! He's getting pretty good at this! ;) But my sister did happen to see him out the window... he didn't know anyone was watching... she saw him tip toe really slowly and he was trying his hardest not to make the porch creak! :p It's a good thing he didn't throw this box because there were DVD's in there! Sometimes even though it says fragile, they'll toss it anyways! Those poor guys! :p The Fed-Ex man is pretty funny too. He normally comes to the door. The first time he came and my mom answered the door he said to her " it's really quiet when I first pull up... then after ringing the doorbell, all hell breaks loose!" :p I thought that one was pretty funny!

Last summer, when Bentley was almost a year old, our house was broken into. She is kenneled during the day and I don't know what the thieves did, but now she is afraid of alot of men and also watches outside closely and if she sees something suspicious she lets us know. However, I don't think she would attack or go near anyone if she would ever be out of her kennel when and if someone broke in. Jada, on the other hand, would lick them to death! She's not afraid of anyone.....yet anyways! :)

I know Heidi would protect us. When there's a knock at the door she let's out a big woof and then heads towards it to see who it is. She is not passive at all and I like it that way. I feel safe with her!:D

I think Harlie would protect us, even though she is only about 35 lbs. and 6 months old. When we are in the back yard and she sees and hears people in the yards next to us, she barks and barks! But if we let them in our yard, its a different story, like she is only accepting them because we are. Its somewhat the same in the house, when the doorbell rings or when someone knocks on the door, she is a mad dog...but she always runs to the wrong door and barks!!! But as soon as we let in who ever it is she is her wiggle butt self.

Now Max on the other hand, is only 8 weeks old, and when we were in the backyard last night, he could hear someone a few yards over, and he ran to the back gatem wagging his nub so fast, just waiting for someone to walk by and pet him! haha! So silly!
