I'm due with my first skinkid in 3 weeks. Just this past weekend, Buster has gotten even more attentive that normal. I mean, he's always under my feet....but now he's 'up my butt' (for lack of a better description). When I go to bed, he lays right beside me (he's usually not a cuddler when it's time to bed down). I mean, lays between me and the edge of the bed, on the 'outside' - and we have a king size bed!!!

Do you think he anticipates the arrival of the baby? Everyone has been so quick to give me their advice about how I 'have' to get rid of him. And I'm so quick to tell them to mind their own business. I mean, I have almost lost a couple friends over this. Nobody seems to understand what my dogs mean to me. The nerve of some people!!!

They definitely have a sense for when something is physically up with their owners. I'm sure Buster is sensing what is going to happen. What a sensitive boy you have!

Boxers are great family dogs, and they love babies. Jade is around babies all the time and she is so sweet with them. I am glad to hear that you are sticking up for Buster and telling those ill informed people to bugger off. As for Buster, I definitly think he know some thing is different and he is probably trying to protect you in your delicate stage. That is so cute, he must love you very much. Good Boy Buster!

Yes!

You know, EVERYONE told me when I was pregnant for Maddy that I'd have to get rid of Rocky (mini pin) he was my only "child" spoiled to heck and back, everyone was afraid of how he would be with the baby, they were afraid he would be nasty because the baby would be getting more attention. Rocky was always in my lap and for 9 months he felt Maddy grow and kick and move, he would sit and stare at my belly, it was so cute, he would poke Maddy with his nose and wait for a response from her. When Madelyn was born we brought her home, everyone kept holding Rocky back from her and I finally yelled "Let him be, let him go, he's fine" and from that minute he never left her side, if anyone came to close to her that he did not know well enough he would growl at them- she was HIS and he took responsibility for protecting her. lol

I truely feel dogs have a sense for things like this, people don't give them enough credit. Especially well trained and loved dogs.

I don't think Rocky (or any of my dogs) really knew. He has been great with our new baby though. He will lay at her feet forvever while she is in her jolly jumper and can hear her crying long before we can (which is kind of neat!)

We got the dumb questions about the dogs too before Maggie's arrival. I just shrugged it off... People who don't have dogs just don't know.

Good luck!

Bail's mommy

It AMAZED me how Bailey was around little kids. The family who I adopted him from had 2 small children (3 now...), and it was like a miracle that clumsy Bail was like a professional ballerina around them...so careful not to knock them over or step on them.

I think they just know...you'll be fine - boxers are amazingly intellegient :D

Austin was dumped by his previous owners (I refuse to call them his family) because they had a new baby. My kids were 2 and 5 when we adopted him, and it's been nothing but good and fun. And he's excellent around my nephews. I think people need to get a life. Good luck with the new baby!

everyone said the same to me, I have 2, and my male Noah was only 7 months and Ashley 2 (my female boxer)when my daughter was born. They were great, I absolutely refused to keep them away from her when I brought her home and had my husband taking clothes she had worn, prior to coming home from the hospital, home so the dogs could sleep with them and smell to their hearts content. Ashley knew I was pregnant and every little twing or anything she was at my side. Noah was still a baby and it wasnt something he really paid attention to, but when i came home from the hospital he was so sweet. I went to lay on the bed after we got home the first day, and the first thing he did was come lay next to me(not touching, I had a csection and its like he knew I was sore)and put his nose to my nose and just layed there with me for about 20 minutes. Guess he was happy to see me. As for the baby they were awesome, to this day (she is 3) they have never jumped on her. Ashley used to check out the bassinet religiously, and if she couldnt hear the baby breathing, she would jump on the bed(to see in the bassinet) and whine until my daughter jerked or moved, knew everything was good, and then go about her business. Needless to say they were outside when the baby was sleeping. Noah was always really careful around her, but I had to keep my eye on ashley because she likes to use her big feet to check things out. I aways made sure the baby was off the floor for the first 15-20 minutes after the dogs came in(they were the most excited then), and after that I didnt have to work too much. Noah really didnt get excited about the baby until she became mobile and then she was interesting. Now they are the best of buddies and I have to watch my daughter with him, because he lets her do anything to him. Ashley I dont watch as much because if Hailey (my daughter)does anything she isnt comfortable with, she just licks my daughter to death, and Hailey gets irritated and leaves her alone.

when i was pregnant with my son we had a rottie at the time (15 yrs ago) and he knew he actually became more protective of me and wouldnt let me out of his sight and when my son was born he slept next to the crib or outside the door if it were shut, when my son was learning to walk bruiser would walk next to him and when my son would loose his balance he always grabbed for bruiser and never hit the ground. they were best of friends.

You know in your heart whether or not Buster will be okay with children. When my sister got pregnant with her first child, she had a boston terrier that was just down-right MEAN! He was very aggressive, had no patience and was unbelievably territorial. So, my sister knew that it would not be a good mix to have Scout with a baby. So, she found him a good home with one of our relatives. She's an older lady that lives alone. Her routine never changes, perfect for Scout! But, on the upside, when I was born, my parents had an english-boxer mix named BUSTER!, there is one picture that shows mom carrying me outside in a carrier thing, she's leaning over to show Buster that I'm okay. I love that picture, boxers are so sweet with babies!
