Talking Back

Toni is 18 weeks old and so far she only barks when she is talking back or not getting her way. I was wondering if it was something that I was doing wrong to have such a sassy mouthed puppy. My skin kids would never think of talking back like that. It is nice to learn that a lot of boxer owners have sassy mouthed dogs. So far the "quiet" command does not work with her. I do not know how to reinforce it. Teaching sit, down, no jump was easy because there was something I could do to show her what I wanted. How does everyone teach the "no bark" or "quiet"?

Tyson only barks at certian times.

For instance.

When Ty wants in from outside, he'll bark.
When Beamer is eating out of Tys bowl, he'll bark. .
When Beamer is eating out his OWN bowl, he'll bark.
When the cats eat out of Tys bowl, he'll bark.
When the cats eat out of Beamers bowl, he'll bark.
When the cats eat out of their OWN bowl, he'll bark.
When we eat, he'll bark.
When Beamer has the toy that Ty wants, he'll bark.
When Beamer ignores Ty, he'll bark.
When I blow dry my hair, he'll bark.
When I sweep the floor, he'll bark.
When I yell at him, he'll bark.
When he can't get past the barrier in the hall to follow the cats, he'll bark.
When you walk out of his sight out side, he'll bark.

Really, other than that, he's pretty quiet.

Seriously, its all good, he's still a pup right now and just likes to voice his opinion on everything. I wouldn't trade him for nothing.

This is so funny! Champ is a barker, but usually it's to let us know someone is at the door. He has a thing for trucks and school buses also. Must be the sound of the diesel engine or something. It used to be much worse. I used to say he must see a leaf blowing across the road and he's barking at it. He understands "no bark" and "Enough!" when it gets to be a bit much. I don't mind the barking - especially if I'm by myself. He lets me know if someone is around before I know it. I wouldn't trade him for anything, either.

I taught katie when she was about 4mo's old. we lived in an apartment complex and i would speak her name sharply "Kate" then say "No" putting my finger up to my lips (librarian like) and point at my watch. It took many many trys....thankfully all neighbors were college kids and didnt complain. But she eventually got the point. A couple of years ago though, we had a break in and she was in the crate at the time, now she barks at anything, i dont want to curb her 'alerting' mode so now i let her bark once and then make her sit next to me then praise her for alerting me. it is still taking many many trys to get this through, what stubborn children they are! I dont know what else might work. Just hang in there! This too shall pass, hopefully!
