A German Boxer lives/was bred in Germany, an American Boxer lives/was bred in America. :)

In general, German Boxers tend to be stockier and not as elegant as (North) American Boxers.

I had been wondering that for a while. When I got Lexus, the breeder had TEN boxers! ( I thought that was WAY to many to care for them they way they need to be) But she had short stalky boxers as well as the tall and thin like the boxers I'm used to seeing. I'm so afraid that Lexus will be stalky like that, but I don't think so. She is much to little at this age and not real wide like the other pups. I thought at first that those weren't really boxers as they looked alot like pits in the body shape.

Did Lexus come from the short stalky Boxers or the tall and thin ones? Looking at the parents will give you a good idea of what your baby will look like in the future. If she had a parent of each then it's harder to say and to guess she will be tall and thin depends on how tall and thin she is now (but hard to say at an early age).:)

G'day
Now I finally know the different between a german and american boxer. I also know the history from the german boxer. But I still wonder where does the american boxers come from. Did Santa Claus dropped them of one christmas? Please enlighten me.

Greetings from downunder

Ron,

According to my reading U.S. soldiers coming home after WW I brought them to the States. How the size differences occured probably has to do with the breeding.

Mozart is a German boxer (ie he was born and bred in Germany where we bought him) and he is quite short and very stocky!

Germans used to crop ears but that practice is now banned I believe, as it is here in UK :).

Tail docking is still carried out in both countries though and Mozart has a tiny little nub of a tail which wasn't docked very well and still gets scabby on the end :(.

We met Mozart's entire family at the breeders where we got him from (mum, dad, grandparents, aunts and uncles!) and they were all short and stocky so we know where he gets it from. We were told that Germans like their dogs to be big and stocky so I guess they had been bred that way deliberately for years.

When I say stocky, I mean very square shaped but with lots of muscle, not fat. Our vet says Mozart is a bit on the heavy side but his muscle definition is very good so he doesn't need to diet.

Cassie on the other hand is a very dainty little girl and is about 3 inches shorter and 30 lbs lighter than Mozart - although she eats far more than he does. Her mother was also very petite but I sometimes wish her ribs weren't quite so prominent as I'm sure people think we starve her :(

Short or tall, fat or thin - I love them all lovicon
