Our 8 month old female has had diarrhea for 4 days with absolutely no other signs of illness. There has been no recent change in diet. She's as happy and active as ever. When the runs started, I began feeding her rice and chicken/beef, but her stools haven't firmed up yet. She can make it through the night, but has been sick in her cage during the day, so today she's tied in the fenced back yard. Any ideas would be helpful.

P.S. She had this one other time, but we figured out she was allergic to persimmons that fell from a tree in the back yard (she loved them). We cut the tree down and there was no problem until now. That's been over 2 months ago.

After 4 days of this I would get her to the vet ASAP. It can lead to dehydration. Obviously there could be a medical problem, or something as simple as eating something out in the yard that she shouldn't have.

I am concerned about her being tied up in the yard without supervision. I have heard too many stories of things that can happen to them.

Even a change from her previous food to the chicken/rice combo might be allowing it to continue. Hopefully the vet can get to the bottom of it for you.

Is she up to date on vaccines and preventitives? If not...it could be Hookworms...or some other parasite? Is there a possibilty that she could have ingested something she can't pass? That's how I found out Herkie had swallowed a beer bottle cap, it started with diahrrea...he was feeling fine...but then he became depressed.

Also...I would get her to the vet ASAP!It could be any number of things that you don't want to go untreated...plus the risk of becoming dehydrated.

And in the meantime you may want to give her a tablespoon of pure pumpkin...not the pie filling...this works wonders on settling an upset tummy!Don't give anymore than a tablespoon, as it has the opposite effect.Or you could give her a Pepto tablet! But I would really try to get her to the vet!Hope she feels better soon!

I agree

I would get your puppy to the vet ASAP, its not good for them to have diarrhea for so long & it may be something simple like an upset tummy or it could be worse.

Thanks

Thanks for all the tips. The boiled chicken/rice diet finally kicked in last night, and she's back to normal.

I was a little surprised at your comments about vaccinations, however. It's hard for me to believe that there are boxer owners out there who would let their dogs go without the scheduled vaccinations. Plus, I was well aware of the dehydration issue. Thanks for your help and concern.

Oh my....I wasn't trying to offend you by the comment about vaccines, etc!I have read many posts and it's amazing about the number of animals that aren't up to date for one reason or another.I was trying to offer a possible solution! But the important thing is that your baby is on the mend....glad to hear she's feeling better! And once again...didn't mean to offend you!
