Demodex,Vomiting, & Constant voiding!

Hello All!
This site has been such a help, and also very scarey! My baby Rosie is 4 1/2 months old and has been diagnosed w/ demodex via vet scrappings. She was given Goodwinol, vitamin supp, and antibiotic. She has started vomiting a few time a week. I stop antibiotic and reduced amount of vitamins. I have read so much about Cushings, and I am freaked out! She goes #1 & #2 alot, however she is very active and seems to be a good weight. She looks good (except of course her mangey spots). I am sure it will be suggested to take her back to the vet, but I would like a little reassurance. Thanks to you all who give your time to this site!

I seriously hope you consulted with your vet before you stopped antibotics like that. demodex is an oppertunistic parasite, which means if your puppies under any type of stress their immune system is lower, which allows the demodex to over invade. I have an 8 month old pup and he poops a lot to. what type of food are you feeding? when you feed your dog higher quality food they digest it and abosorb the nutrients more which means less waste.
your highest quality foods are like Science diet, eukanuba, prescription diets from your vet ect. cushing disease is usually seen in old dogs so I wouldn't be concerned what that so much right now. you need to keep her on her vitamins and consult your vet about getting another antibotic or restarting the one they started you on

LuLaRose please see your vet re: meds & questions - it is very important for your baby that the Demodex be treated properly. As for a high quality human grade kibble do a search here and you will find some great names: Wellness, Canidae, Nutro Ultra, Natural Balance. Science Diet, Iams and Eukanuba are not high quality foods and full of fillers. Good luck

I did talk to the vet, and have an appointment tomorrow for a follow up of the Demodex. I feed her Nutro Max (Is this the same as Nutro). She was on Science Diet and was doing fine. Maybe should put her back on it? Could be food change causing some of these issues. I feel so uneducated when it comes to Rosie. I have been in the medical field for 15 years. (I know it is different than animals) I am always worried about her. Boxers seem to have so many issues. I love her so much, she is my "dream dog" and I want to make sure she is okay. I thank you for support, afterall isnt that why we are all here?

Just curious.....why was your girl put on antibiotics for demodex? Did she have open sores that the vet was concerned would lead to a secondary skin infection? Antibiotics kill off ALL bacteria, good and bad. Oftentimes they can be the culprit that does lead to vomiting as some can cause stomach upset.

As far as the Goodwinol. I am assuming that your girl has only localized demodex, hence this medication to apply to the "few" spots that are present. I know that this medication has probably helped in some cases but there are other ways to fight this and you can do a search here on BW and easily spend hours just on the subject of demodex.

My girl had demodex as a pup and I also tried the Goodwinol for less than 2 weeks without any effects. I know that I didn't give it the full length of time but found BW and also other more natural ways to go about helping her to boost the immune system so that she was capable of ridding her body of it herself.

From the first sign something was wrong until all the hair had returned it was just under 4 months. We opted for more natural healing methods that were easily found at local health food stores. If you are interested in our approach please feel free to PM me and I can offer you some info.

My boxers have always pooed & peed a lot I wouldn't worry about that. Mostly it was because of the food they were on. Science Diet is NOT a good food at all so I wouldn't suggest putting him back on it.

I's like to add that Wellness and Canidae, Nutro, are great foods according to the Whole Dog Journal which is a great source of info if you have any questions about food.

Why did your vet have your dog on an antibiotic? Also, are any of the medicines he is on steroids? Steroids make them pee A LOT, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was peeing so much on them.

Buster eats Science Diet and i would love to know why it is not a good dog food, he's been eating SD since we've had him(1 year). Should i be worried about the food.
I would also like to know what mangey spots are and what do they look like.

Tae had localized Demodex this summer and my vet didn't even bother giving me Goodwinol. I did some research and and learned it doesn't even necessarily have any effect. If you have it, can't hurt to apply it, though.

I had Tae on Nurto Max Large Breed (BEFORE I realized Boxers are a medium-sized breed!) and she did well on it. I think it's easier, though, to feed an all life stages food, such as Canidae, or one of the others mentioned. These foods are often found at independent pet stores.

Of note, some foods, especially lower quality kibbles, will lead to more frequent and more "voluminous" poop! Tae has been on Canidae for about 3 - 3 1/2 mos and her poops are often very small! Love it!

I would not put your pup back on Science Diet b/c it's not a high quality food. Check the feeding forum for some ideas, in addition to the kibbles mentioned above.

She is on Nutro Max natural. It is not specified for puppies or adults. I had read here on BW that "puppy" food is not really necessary. True? There were no open sores, or any sign of a skin infection. That is why I felt it was okay to take that out of all she was getting. I am still seeing hair loss, but only in the local areas she has had before. No new spots.

A side note, the vet also said that puppies need to be vaccinated every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks. I had never heard this before. She had been vaccinated 3 time only. Is this okay? If my vet is wrong I will switch vets. On Rosie's 3rd set she had a severe reaction. We had to rush her to the ER, and she had to spend the night. I really hesitate to vaccinate more than needed. Dont you agree?

your vet makes sense with the vaccination schedule where I work our protocol is for dogs that are not going to be hunting, traveling a lot, or be inand around bodies of water we vaccinate the dystemper WITHOUT leptosporsis at 8-12-16 weeks because the 6 week shot that some breeders give may not be as affective because the puppy may still have immunity from the mother.We vaccinate for rabies at 16 weeks. if the dog stays on schedule with their shots for the first 4 years of life we then go to a every other every protocol with the dystemper. we don't use the leptosporsis part of the dystemper vax in puppies with low risk of exposure because it has been shown that of that vax the lepto part is the one with the highest incidence of reaction.
